Not a bad way to start the day. Not long ago author, educator, brand strategist, podcast host, and all-round fun and interesting Debbie Millman sent me her 10 “What Matters” questions. Responses are posted as a column by the same name on the PRINT Magazine website.

Those being questioned are asked to provide a “less formal the better” photograph to pair with the finished article. My “Arbor Lodge Gothic” photo was taken by my husband, Ed Cunningham.

With the passing of Darcelle XV, the city of Portland is a little less bright and sparkly tonight. I first met Darcelle back in the 80s. Over the years our paths crossed numerous times - occasionally as I did graphic design projects involving the person Guinness World Records certified as “the oldest drag queen performer” in 2016. The efforts included the logo for a 1995 fundraiser for People with AIDS, art directing a paper doll book featuring Darcelle as the similarly large than life Divine [with illustrations by Tracy Hayes], morphing images of Darcelle and Divine to create the logo for the 1994 triangle productions! play, and in 2020 creating the “topper” to be installed over City of Portland street signs in the blocks around the Darcelle XV Showplace, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in that same year. Rest in Peace, Walter Cole…

Sorry to see the history of this great Salem business come to a end. I had the privilege and pleasure of redesigning the Cooke Stationery Company "Mr. Stationer" logo in 1999.

The office supply store will discontinue deliveries at the end of March and its last day of business will be April 28.

Everyone’s a critic. Whether you’re a CEO, an author, a performer, or a professor, people will review your work. And whether you’re a revered CEO, Stephen King, or Taylor Swift, criticism can sting. “I’ve had every part of my life dissected — my choices, my actions, my words, my body, my...

“In 1962, George Lois was the fast-talking, egomaniacal, foul-mouthed, proudly and inextricably Greek New York street kid at the top of the advertising business, and Esquire’s editor, Harold Hayes, offered him $600 a month to give its covers a jolt of energy.” | via Curbed

The madman (but not a Mad Man, he was quick to tell you) behind Maypo, MTV, and Muhammad Ali’s Esquire cover has died at 91.

It’s been ages since I did any kind of reverse image search to see if rip-offs of any of my logo designs would be found. Truth of the matter is that it can be incredibly exhausting and disheartening to repeatedly find one’s work blatantly stolen by unethical designers and offered for sale around the world in a variety of formats. Still, I’d never tried Google Lens to see what kind of design thievery of a logo would pop up on the Interwebs.

I opted to experiment on my current most ripped off design - the logo for the Whangamata Cat Adoption Team in New Zealand. The first page of findings showed unauthorized use of my design by , a bastardization on , an image on and usage by two vendors. And those results were found without any effort on my part. So disappointing…

I moved beyond the evil Adobe a couple years ago now. Big Affinity fan these days. Their ridiculously inexpensive software programs are currently 50% off. I recommend giving them a try - especially at the sale prices!

From the smoothest, fastest photo editing and graphic design software to the most powerful publishing software, Affinity apps are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with creative technology.
