How do you inspire a generation who grew up with screens to rediscover the power of making music with their own hands?

Last year, we won a global pitch for Yamaha . We didn’t win with a local office. We won with people across five time zones, eight languages, three generations, and a shared curiosity about what’s coming next. We built the team for the problem.

Today, we’re excited to share Yamaha’s first Global Brand Film & Campaign “You Are the Instrument”. The campaign makes a radical case that every instrument Yamaha makes is ultimately made to play one thing: you.

As a smaller, agile team we got to do all of it: 🧠 strategy, 🎨 creative, 🛠️ production, and 📱media - bringing this big idea to life, end to end.

With this film we show the impact of music, the way the inner life is stirred. But instead of hearing and often seeing people play instruments, we see the instruments playing them.

This one’s for you.

Yamaha is casting real players (ages 7–28) for a paid social video celebrating the emotional bond between musicians and their instruments.

No acting.
No perfection.
Just real connection.

If you play a Yamaha instrument, we’d love to see you.

Last May, Red & Co. released Mood, an app for iPhone and Android, in collaboration with Welsh architect Gareth Dauncey. In his talk at The DO Lectures, Gareth shared how Mood came to be. A Welsh architect and family man, Gareth had lived with depression on and off throughout his life. After one particularly dark period, Gareth decided to do something about it and started to record how he felt each day in color. He found that being able to see how he felt over time, allowed him to better manage his mental health. After meeting others who wanted to do the same, he decided to develop the app to help them too. And that’s when Red & Co. came on board. As Gareth said in his talk, “It’s designed for me at my worst. . . . It’s got to be so that if you can’t get out of bed, you’ll still do it.” The app asks a single, non leading question: How do you feel today? to make tracking your daily mood simple and unobtrusive. With one tap, you can record your prevailing mood for the day. The lighter the mood, the lighter the shade. Over time, your mood stack grows, and as you become more self-aware you gain more control over your mental health. A year after Mood’s launch, we hope you’ll find the time to watch Gareth share his story at The DO Lectures. Wherever you are – whoever you are – you’re not alone. It’s okay to not be okay.

What not to miss at the close of Arab-American Heritage Month >

1: Love is An Ex-Country: A Memoir by Randa Jarrar. Published in 2021, Jarrar’s essays share about her life as a Palestinian and Egyptian woman.

2: A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum. Rum earned numerous high-profile literary accolades with this intergenerational story of Palestinian-American women in Brooklyn.

3: Mai Al-Nakib’s novel, An Unlasting Home, tells the story of Sara, a philosophy professor who moves from California to Kuwait. Like many of our favorite stories at Red & Co., this novel weaves together the connections between daughters, mothers, and grandmothers. (Visit the author’s website at https://buff.ly/3LzWTwQ)

4: Q is Jude Chehab’s debut feature film, and it is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival this June. The documentary explores how her mother’s commitment to an esoteric religious order impacts their relationship.

For Arab-American Heritage month, our founder, Mira Kaddoura, honors the Kaddoura women who came before her and laid the foundations of the Arab women’s movement.

One hundred years ago, these women did the impossible and fought for the justice, education, and liberation that many women have today.

In 1917, Dr. Ibtihaj Kaddoura founded what may have been the first women’s cultural club in the Arab world. In addition to her charitable pursuits on behalf of women and war orphans, Dr. Ibtihaj advocated unceasingly for women’s right to vote. Finally, in 1953, she secured the franchise for all Lebanese women.

Dr. Zahia Kaddoura, born in 1920, was the first Lebanese woman to earn a PhD from an Egyptian university and the first female dean of Lebanese University. She carried on her Aunt Ibtihaj’s legacy of fighting for Lebanese and Arab women and was a major figure in the Lebanese independence movement.

To Wadia Kaddoura, Zahia’s older sister, we owe a special debt of thanks. We were able to source our research from an English translation of her writing. Dr. Ibtihaj and Dr. Zahia also wrote many books and articles; Mira’s hope is to translate and digitize their entire catalog. Women’s contributions to history often disappear from memory, which is why these first-hand accounts of the Lebanese and Arab women’s movement are so precious – and so powerful.

Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating!

At Red & Co., we love to think really hard and make stuff pretty. One of our favorite design projects was when Kroger and Union Wine Co. hired us to package 10+ white-label wine brands. Each brand appealed to a distinct, primarily female millennial audience. Creating delightful (and precisely targeted) wine packaging meant that the right person could pull the right bottle or can from the shelf with confidence. We’re proud that our work helped fuel friendships, book clubs, and late night heart-to-hearts all across the United States.
