in , 1931, the adopted the Star-Spangled Banner as its national anthem. Its author had witnessed his country’s unlikely triumph in the face of certain defeat. Thus, a descendant recalled, his “proud and patriotic heart…burst forth with an inspiration in a song of praise, victory, and thanksgiving.”

During the War of 1812, the British set aflame both the and Capitol before targeting ’s Fort McHenry. There, an attorney named Francis Scott Key witnessed the barrage of rockets, bombs, and “a seething sea of flame.” But in his own words:

“Suddenly it ceased—all was quiet, not a shot fired or sound heard…[I turned my] eyes in the direction of the fort and its flag, but the darkness had given place to a heavy fog of smoke and mist…At last it came…the morning sun rose in the fullness of his glory, lifting ‘the midst of the deep’ crowning a ‘Heaven-blest land’ with a new victory and grandeur.”

Key immediately set forth to turn his emotions into words, setting his poem to the tune, “To Anacreon in Heaven.” Together, they became known as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” But though the song was an instant success, it became just one of several that Americans used to celebrate “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

In 1929, though, a Congressman named John Linthicum introduced “An act to make the Star Spangled Banner the national anthem of the of .” He explained that during the War of 1812—what some consider our second war for independence—“The country needed a national song to give expression to its .” The Star-Spangled Banner:

“Lifted the national spirit from the vale of gloom and despair in which it had been floundering to the sunlit heights of confidence and victory. It heralded the dawn of a new day to our Federal Government. In moral value it was worth ten thousand bayonets.”

🇺🇸 Honoring President Abraham Lincoln – A Legacy That Endures 🇺🇸
Born February 12, 1809

Today we celebrate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States and one of the most revered leaders in American history. Born on February 12, 1809, Lincoln rose from humble beginnings to guide the nation through its most challenging chapter—the Civil War—while preserving the Union and advancing the cause of freedom.

Lincoln’s steadfast belief that the United States was a nation “conceived in Liberty” helped redefine the American promise. Through the Emancipation Proclamation, his leadership during the Civil War, and his call for unity in the Gettysburg Address, he strengthened the ideals set forth by the Founding Fathers and ensured they would endure for future generations.

As we look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, Lincoln’s legacy reminds us that the American experiment has always required courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to liberty and equality. His leadership bridged the founding generation and the modern nation, preserving the Constitution and the Union so that the promise of 1776 could continue forward.

On this day, we honor Abraham Lincoln’s life, leadership, and lasting impact on the United States as we continue the journey toward the Semiquincentennial.

🇺🇸 Honoring Founding Father James Duane – New York’s Voice of Leadership 🇺🇸

Born February 6, 1733

As we continue the journey toward America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, we pause to honor James Duane, a dedicated patriot and statesman whose leadership helped guide the young nation through its earliest challenges.

Born on February 6, 1733, in New York City, Duane became a respected lawyer and public servant. When tensions with Great Britain grew, he stepped forward to represent New York in the Continental Congress, where he worked alongside fellow patriots to support the cause of independence and unity among the colonies.

Duane signed the Articles of Confederation, helping establish the first framework of national government, and later served as Mayor of New York City following the Revolution. In addition, he became one of the first federal judges appointed by President George Washington, continuing his service to the new Republic through the judicial branch.

James Duane’s steady leadership reminds us that building a nation required more than bold declarations—it required thoughtful governance, legal wisdom, and a deep commitment to the common good.

As we look ahead to America 250, we honor Duane and the many leaders whose dedication laid the groundwork for the freedoms and institutions we cherish today.

✨ A Look Back at Something Truly Special from Our Roots! ✨

We were thrilled to receive this link about one of our early pennant designs — created by my grandfather and produced by Advertising Flag Company (AdFlag) back in 1960. His artwork for an Oakland Raiders AFL pennant shows creativity and bold originality that you just don’t see anymore! 🏈🎨

🔗 Check out the story here: https://pennantfactory.weebly.com/blog/category/oakland-raiders-afl-pennant-1960-adflag

This particular pennant is incredibly rare — it’s one of the earliest Raiders pennants ever made and even features a moustached Raider in the artwork, a detail never repeated in other versions and unlike any official team logo of the time. The piece reflects how our artists at Advertising Flag Co. weren’t afraid to think outside the box when crafting pennants for professional teams in the 1960s.

It’s fascinating to see how design history comes full circle, and a reminder of the creative spirit that has always defined our work. 🙌

Have a story or vintage pennant of your own? Share it below — we’d love to see it!

232 years ago, President George Washington signed the Flag Act of January 13, 1794, officially designating the 15-star, 15-stripe Star-Spangled Banner as the flag of the United States! This was our nation's second official flag, featuring two additional stars and stripes to represent the new states of Vermont and Kentucky, which joined the Union in 1791 and 1792.

This banner proudly flew as our official flag until 1818, when it was updated to showcase twenty stars for even more states, while two stripes were removed to honor the thirteen original colonies.

To this day, a 15-star, 15-stripe flag still flies over Fort McHenry as it did during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814. Join us for one of our flag programs and discover how this flag inspired an anthem!
