Child care isn’t just a family issue. It’s a workforce issue.
I attended a conversation this week on Child Care and Economic Growth in Yavapai County, and it hit both personally and professionally.
This isn’t theoretical for me.
When I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to return to work after maternity leave.
I love what I do. My career is part of my purpose.
But I also knew finding infant care in our area would be a challenge.
So as soon as I found out I was pregnant… I started calling daycares.
The first question I was asked?
“What’s their name for the waitlist?”
My answer:
“I don’t even know the gender yet… I’m still growing eyeballs at this point. But I’d like those eyeballs on your waitlist.”
I followed up with in-person visits.
Yes… pregnant, still in heels, walking into facilities asking for a spot.
Because the reality was simple:
If I couldn’t find childcare…
I didn’t know how I was going to go back to work.
I was lucky.
Those “eyeballs” made it into one of just 63 available infant spots in the COUNTY.
63.
That number alone tells you everything you need to know.
And today’s event reinforced just how big this issue really is.
• Arizona is projected to lose $1.77 billion annually due to lack of child care
• $348 million in lost tax revenue
• 34% of parents have left a job because of child care challenges
This isn’t just about early parenthood.
Child care is something families are constantly solving for:
After school.
School breaks.
Summer.
Year after year.
And for businesses?
This directly impacts your workforce.
We talk about hiring challenges.
Retention.
Workforce shortages.
But how often are we talking about the root cause?
Because for many parents, it’s not about willingness to work.
It’s about whether they can.
Today’s conversation challenged us to shift the lens:
Child care isn’t just a social issue.
It’s infrastructure for a functioning economy.
If we want strong businesses, a reliable workforce, and sustainable growth…
This has to be part of the conversation.
And more importantly, part of the solution.
