There is an Ancient Hawaiian legend involving the demi-god Maui and the Sun, represented by the image in our logo. Before his encounter with Maui, the Sun would race across the sky as it rose and set very quickly. This affected the women who needed the sun to dry their kapa (cloth), including Maui's mother, the goddess Hina. Feeling the need to help his mother, Maui devised a plan to slow the path of the Sun.
Maui made a lasso from coconut husks and climbed to the summit of Mt. Haleakalā, so that when the Sun came up the mountain side to rise above him, Maui could cast the noose to catch the Sun. However, he only snared one of the Sun's larger rays and broke it off. Again and again, Maui threw the lasso until he had broken off all the strong rays of the Sun.
Then he shouted triumphantly, "You are my captive; I should kill you for going so swiftly."
Then the Sun promised, "Let me live and you shall see me go more slowly."
So, the agreement was made. Maui permitted him to pursue his course, and from that day on, the Sun moved at a slower pace.
