Heard about the "ChatGPT Virus" this week? I interviewed one of the leading researchers from the lab that did it - Samuel King, of Stanford University. On Thursday, The New York Times covered this story and it’s now global news! We go deeper into their goals for the project and future implications in our full length interview on "Talk BIO to Me" Podcast here on youtube: https://youtu.be/i-XxyjW3fO0?si=XJM7PZJ9VyCDDRfq

Samuel King, a PhD candidate at Stanford, working at the intersection of AI and bioengineering, joins host Flo Lumsden to unpack how his team used AI to generate the first fully functional bacteriophage genome from scratch, and why that could mean far more targeted treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections. Inspired by the publishing industry, Adrian Woolfson’s co-founder Kaihang brought ‘page numbers’ to DNA. Now, DNA can be assembled programmatically, like piecing together a book without reading every page.

Great t**s and many other bird species are being forced to adapt as climate change alters the timing of the natural world.

Scientists say warmer spring temperatures are causing caterpillars and other insects to emerge earlier each year. For many birds, that means their chicks hatch after the peak food supply has already passed, making it harder for parents to find enough food to keep them alive.

While species can adapt over time through evolution, researchers warn that the pace of today's climate change may be happening faster than many birds can adjust.

What are your thoughts?

It was such an honor to sit down with SynBioBeta founder John Cumbers this year - (at the conference itself!) Unlike most in the space, he’s watched synbio grow from a niche research field into a global industry firsthand. So, you can imagine this was a very insightful…

We cover:
🧬 How AI is reshaping biology — from LLMs designing novel enzymes and antibodies to full-stack scientific innovation

🐷 Xenotransplantation and humanized pig organs

🍺 Consumer biotech already on shelves — like probiotic hangover cures

🌱 Genetically engineered glowing plants

🤖 Why John believes we’re closer to AGI than most people think — and how biology gets us there

🌍 The origin story of SynbioBeta — from 150 people in a law firm conference room to a 2,000+ person global event

John Cumbers, founder of SynBioBeta, reflects: As AGI approaches, the real questions aren’t about implementation, but societal shifts and business models. Where do humans fit in? Do we even need money anymore?

Nicholas Larus-Stone explains how AI agents he is building at Benchling are changing scientific discovery in big ways. Link in BIO to Talk BIO to Me episode 4.

For one investor, it started in academia, a connection to the former US Secretary of Defense, and a desire to pay off student loans.
