Making technology usable and beneficial is one of Tanzima Hashem’s career goals. As a professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, she is recognized internationally for her collaborative research. In 2017, she received the Elsevier Foundation Award for Early-Career Women Scientists in the Developing World for her work developing computational approaches to privacy protection when using location-based services. More recently she is engaged in developing novel trip planning algorithms that optimize traveler safety and using smartphones to diagnose disease.

Want to know how a woman helped establish the modern-day Internet? Meet Radia Perlman. As an engineer and mathematician in the 1970s, she invented the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) algorithm, which solved a huge information routing problem. In 2004, Perlman was named Inventor of the Year by the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association and has been listed as one of the 20 most influential people in information technology by Data Communications Magazine.

We’d love for you to meet Annie Easley, a groundbreaking computer scientist in terms of both gender and racial diversity. In 1955, she launched her career at NASA as a “human computer,” and when machines replaced people, she became an adept computer programmer. Her many accomplishments include creating code used in researching energy-conversion systems, such as battery technology used in early hybrid vehicles and the Centaur upper-stage rocket series used from 1966 to present day.

The actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr emigrated from Austria to the United States of America in 1937. During WWII, she and George Antheil, a fellow inventor and composer, patented a radio wave technology that prevented jamming by employing “frequency hopping” across a spectrum. The invention was patented in 1942 and was designed to guide Allied torpedoes to their targets. Although not used during WWII, the technology’s principles were used by the US Navy in the 1960s and are employed in today’s wireless communication systems for Bluetooth and GPS.
