Mood board for a recent project 🤍

Interior design companies (and other visual service provides) are always an interesting brand challenge. There are no people with greater taste and greater vision for their brand—vibrancy, whimsy, textures, layers.

And yet, the actual website and brand presence needs to be a mere canvas to display their work at its best.

It’s a fine—and fun—balance to strike. Really excited about how this one is turning out!

The two things I need to remind my website design clients to really take so so seriously (because they’d skip otherwise):

Brand photography and website copywriting.

The irony is that when we’re going through their Discovery Questionnaire during our Website Strategy Call (post-booking, but before the design sprint) like 80% of their favorite sites have these kinds of notes:

“I love how totally cohesive the whole site looks”
“I know exactly what they do in like two seconds”
“Their products look so professional”

These notes are actually all about the quality of the photography and the copywriting!

This is great news, because YOU are in control of those things! You get to hire a great photographer, and you get to write (or hire a great writer) the website words of your dreams. Praise God!

I bring this up for two reasons:

1️⃣ Don’t skimp on great writing and great photos. They’ll serve you far beyond your website, and they are the major factors of why so many websites are as high-converting as they are. Invest!
2️⃣ The flip is true—mediocre pictures and haphazard copywriting can take even the most beautiful of website designs. If you’ve ever bought a template you love and then added your content and went “oh, that is not good”, it’s the lack of cohesion in the photos and lackluster copywriting.

This is maybe even a crazy thing to say on a website & brand design Instagram, but I’d invest in high-quality photography before I’d invest in a custom-designed website. (oops, did I say that?).

More of a personal project, I suppose, since it’s for a retreat that I am on the committee for, but the end result was too good not to share here.

This is only my 4th Showit site and I’m completely obsessed with the platform and I’m so sorry to anyone on a disco call with me who asks “which platform do you recommend”? I will yap all day.

These colors are my favorite, the earthy elegance worked so well, and I’m so excited to see this retreat come to life!

Just an update from our Founders!

We’ve been hustling the last few months to get the first bit of content for the Founders Society out to our beta testers, while also building websites and brands and words for our clients 🙂 A season of stretching!

Liz is on her way from New Hampshire to Washington for a job change and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future has in store! Would you pray for her safety and peace as she settles into a new place?

Victoria is also prepping for a one-month move to Minneapolis for her husband’s job and is feeling all the things about being displaced for a bit. Would you pray for her joy and connection as she travels?

There are a million things we've heard other brand designers and busniess owners say that make us cringe inside. The core of all of them?

**Shame**

Some version of:

- You're not good enough yet.
- You don't know enough.
- What you have isn't sufficient.
- Keep up or die trying.

Shame is a big ole red flag for us here at Awake & Seek. We're here to help you own your brand and own your lane, and kick shame to the curb in Jesus name.

How to stand out by breaking your industry's "rules":

Did you know there were rules to begin with?! All cultures—including the subculture of your industry—have rules, mostly unspoken.

Here's the trick—figure out the conventions of your industry, and then break them (organically and authentically, of course).

Here's how.

DISCOVER THE RULES
Step 1—Review all the posts you've saved from other coaches, authors, ministry leaders, etc. What do they all have in common (works best over the last 3-4 months)?

Step 2—What are the top 5 things you can't STAND about your industry?

Step 3—If you had to personify or archetype your industry, what would you say? Get ancient here. If you're a coach, you're in the transformation industry (like a magician). If you're a non-fiction author, you're in the information industry (like a sage).

BREAK 'EM
Step 1—Do you agree with what they're alllll saying? What is your industry NOT saying that you think is super important?

Step 2—Why can't you stand those things? What's the truth that's fueling your anger? Speak that truth!!

Step 3—How can you be a different archetype in your industry? Don't be a magician in a magician's world. If you're a coach, how can you be focused on something OTHER than transformation? Can you lead with wisdom? Lead with caregiving? Lead with rebellion?

Applying brand strategy to your marketing saves you major time. Here's how:

1. Imposter syndrome isnt' taking up space in your brain, causing you to ruminate and re-read your caption for the 5th time.

2. You're spending less time scrolling "for research" because you know what you're up to and comparison can't get to you any more.

3. You've actually doing LESS marketing...which means LESS time spent figuring out new learning curves or using platforms that don't matter to your people at all.

5 questions your website needs to answer:

1/5 What is this?
You know, you know, but get specific! You're not just a coach, you're a spiritual mentor. You're not just an author, you're freeing women from body shame.

2/5 Is this for me?
Your clients are asking: Is this my personality? Is this my values? Is this something I need? Answer those questions!

Pro tip: If you're like, "it's for everyone!" start writing a list of who your services are NOT for.

3/5 How will I feel?
Also answer: What will I get? What will I be able to do? What are you promising me?

4/5 Who are you?
At some point, they'll want to know about you. Depending on your relationship to your client, they'll be asking: Could she be my friend? Does she have enough experience to be my leader? Has she experienced what I'm going through? Tell them what they're asking about your story.

5/5 What should I do next?
Your website needs to encourage them to DO something—convert them from a watcher to a participator. Help them along the journey by giving them a sign post: Apply now, book here, subscribe.
