TWO CHILDREN RESUSCITATED AFTER BEING PULLED FROM HWY 162 CANAL

Butte County, California — Two juveniles were successfully resuscitated after a violent two-vehicle collision sent a minivan carrying six people into an irrigation canal Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred on June 19, 2026, at approximately 10:42 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 162 and Aguas Frias Road.
CHP Dispatch received reports of a collision involving two vehicles and was advised that one of them had overturned into a nearby canal and was partially submerged.
Officers from the CHP Oroville Area Office responded and found a minivan upside down in the irrigation canal south of Highway 162.
All six occupants had already been removed from the water by passing motorists and Good Samaritans who stopped to help.
The second vehicle involved, a four-door BMW sedan, came to rest disabled in the eastbound lanes of Highway 162 near the intersection.
According to CHP, the minivan was occupied by two adults and four juveniles.
When officers arrived, two of the children were unresponsive and not breathing.
Bystanders had already begun CPR, and a CHP officer immediately joined them in providing lifesaving efforts.
Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly afterward and continued treatment, successfully reviving both juveniles.
All four juveniles were transported to hospitals by a combination of ground and air ambulances for further medical treatment.
The two adult occupants of the minivan were also transported to local hospitals.
The sole occupant and driver of the BMW, an adult male, suffered minor injuries and was not transported from the scene.
Investigators said all occupants of both vehicles were properly restrained with seat belts and child restraint systems.
CHP believes those safety devices likely reduced the severity of injuries sustained in the collision.
Based on the preliminary investigation and evidence collected at the scene, the BMW was traveling southbound on Aguas Frias Road when, for reasons still under investigation, it failed to stop at the intersection with Highway 162.
The BMW entered the intersection and collided with the eastbound minivan, causing it to lose control, overturn, and plunge into the irrigation canal.
The investigation remains ongoing.

The CHP Oroville Area Office expressed its appreciation to the passing motorists and Good Samaritans who stopped to assist, including those who immediately began CPR and rendered aid before emergency crews arrived.
CHP also thanked CAL FIRE/Butte County, Butte County EMS, and all responding emergency medical personnel for their rapid response and assistance at the scene.
