AI can generate graphics in seconds.

But as more businesses use the same tools, prompts, and trends, more brands are starting to look the same.

The challenge isn’t whether AI is “good” or “bad.” It’s whether your brand still feels authentic, recognizable, and human in the process.

At Signal & Story, we believe AI works best as a creative tool, not a replacement for strategy, storytelling, or originality. The strongest branding still comes from real perspective, thoughtful design, and authentic visual identity.

We put together a short 3 minute read on the opportunities, risks, and realities of using AI in modern branding and marketing.

AI-generated graphics are fast and affordable, but brands risk looking generic when everything starts to feel the same. Here’s how to use AI without losing authenticity.

Designing menus like this is one of the most creatively rewarding things I get to do.

Not just because they’ve won awards over the years, but because the best menus do more than list drinks or food. They create anticipation. They tell a story. They become part of the experience before the first sip ever hits the table.

The new Rum Sugar Lime Seasonal menu was built to feel fun, immersive, tropical, and just a little mischievous. Every detail matters, from naming and layout to illustration, pacing, readability, and how the whole thing feels in your hands.

It’s branding people actually spend time with.

As Signal & Story, I’m fortunate to help businesses create pieces that don’t just inform, but engage.

If your business could use a menu, brand piece, campaign, or visual refresh that people actually remember… let’s talk.

Everyone has a different version of Reno in their head.

Which probably explains why we’ve never quite nailed down a single identity.

We wrote a quick take on that. About a one-minute read.

But I’m more curious… how would you define Reno?

Reno keeps trying to solve an identity question with branding. For decades, we’ve leaned on “The Biggest Little City in the World,” a line that speaks to size, not substance. Today, ask what Reno is and you’ll get a dozen answers. Tech hub, outdoor basecamp, college town, casino legacy. Ever...

Amen. 👏🏼
Here’s some good fodder that might help you decide between hiring a professional, or basing your brand and advertising in AI. 😉

Turns out AI is a risky business for your brand! 🚨 Where it may help deliver quick results, you could be paying a high cost in the long term. Read more at our blog: https://loom.ly/MW1lE-g

A cocktail costs $12.
Another costs $20.

Most guests couldn’t tell you why.

They don’t see the ingredients.
They don’t know the process.

They see what’s in front of them.

That’s perceived value.

And it’s shaping every buying decision your customers make.

New on the blog: how pricing isn’t just about cost, it’s about what people believe they’re getting.

Perceived value pricing shapes how customers judge what something is worth. It’s not just about cost, but how the experience communicates value at first glance.

One of the most common things I hear from business owners:

“We need better marketing.”

Sometimes that’s true.

But marketing can’t fix a disappointing experience. It only makes more people aware of it.

A few thoughts on local business, reputation, and reality in Northern Nevada.

Marketing Doesn’t Fix a Bad Experience | Lessons for Northern Nevada Businesses Many Northern Nevada businesses believe marketing will solve slow traffic or declining sales. In reality, marketing amplifies customer experience, good or bad. Here’s why experience matters more than promotion.

Pricing conversations come up a lot with local businesses. Why some prices feel fair instantly and others get questioned.

I shared a few thoughts on perception, experience, and the signals we send long before a price appears.

If you’ve ever wrestled with pricing, this one’s for you:

Your logo is doing a lot of heavy lifting when you’re not looking. 👀

It’s squeezed into tiny squares, slapped onto signs, dropped into feeds, and asked to behave itself everywhere from Google Maps to your front door.

Most logos look fine. Fewer actually work.

This is a look at what separates the good-looking logos from the ones that do more than look good hold up in the real world, especially for local brands.

January in Reno always has a certain quiet to it.

The holidays wind down, the pace softens, and for a lot of small business owners, the thinking gets heavier.

If this month has you reflecting, questioning, or re-prioritizing, you’re not alone. I wrote a bit about why January can feel so hard, and why it actually matters, for local businesses here:

January in Reno always feels a little quieter. The holidays have passed. The streets slow down. The buzz of November and December fades, and suddenly you’re left with reality. Fewer people walking through the door. Fewer emails coming in. More questions than answers. This isn’t because you’re ...
