• Executive positioning and thought leadership
• Press releases, pitches and contributed content
• Media monitoring and intelligence

Sometimes, becoming more productive means recognizing when a supposedly productive habit is actually creating unnecessary mental work.

Media Consulting founder Logan recently identified one in his own workflow: leaving browser tabs open.

Each tab represented something legitimate — a project, an idea or a problem to solve. But collectively, those tabs had become more than an organizational system. They were keeping dozens of cognitive loops open simultaneously.

So he changed the system.

Rather than leaving multiple AI conversations open, Logan now works through one conversation until reaching a meaningful stopping point, saves it to his AI knowledge library, closes the tab and starts the next topic in a new conversation.

The workload hasn't changed.

The way it's managed has.

The result has been a cleaner workspace, more focused thinking and less mental energy spent keeping track of unfinished work.

As AI becomes more integrated into professional life, perhaps one of the most valuable skills isn't simply learning how to prompt effectively.

It's learning when to intentionally close the cognitive loop.

What seemingly productive habit have you changed after realizing it was creating unnecessary cognitive load?

Looking back, I'm not sure I was ever going to end up very far from strategic communication.

I was raised by a father who built his career as both an exceptional prosecutor and civil trial attorney. Beyond practicing law, he also had a genuine interest in marketing. Long before I understood either profession, I watched him break down complex legal issues into narratives ordinary people could understand. I watched him think about his audience, frame arguments strategically and communicate in ways that informed and persuaded.

Looking back, I realize I wasn't just watching someone practice law — I was learning the fundamentals of strategic communication from someone who had mastered them.

Years later, I joined the marketing department at Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen, one of 's leading personal injury law firms. Working alongside attorneys and marketing professionals reinforced many of those same communication principles. Effective public relations wasn't about saying everything you wanted to say. It was about understanding your audience, identifying what mattered to them and communicating information in a way that was clear, credible and compelling.

Journalism later refined those lessons through verification, accuracy and newsworthiness.

Today, when I develop an earned media strategy, I don't begin by asking, "What message does the client want to communicate?"

I begin by asking:

• What makes this newsworthy?
• Why would a journalist cover it?
• Why should an audience care?

Looking back, I can see a direct line connecting every stage of my career. The characteristics that define an exceptional trial advocate introduced me to strategic communication. Legal marketing demonstrated how those principles could be applied professionally. Journalism refined them through the discipline of newsworthiness.

Those experiences continue to shape every media strategy I develop today.

What early experience helped shape the way you communicate professionally?

For years, communicators have debated the future of organic earned media. I believe it isn’t disappearing.

What has changed is the sheer volume of information competing for attention. As inboxes become more crowded and competition for coverage intensifies, newsworthiness has become even more important. Organizations that consistently earn media coverage are those that understand how journalists evaluate stories—not simply those with the largest budgets or the messages they consider most important.

In .barry.1993’s first personal LinkedIn article, I explore why I believe reports of organic earned media’s decline are greatly exaggerated and why the fundamentals of newsworthiness remain as relevant today as ever.

I’d appreciate hearing your perspective.

I got my start in covering , where every story had a direct impact on the communities it served.

That experience continues to shape how I approach media relations today.

As a former reporter, I understand what makes a story genuinely newsworthy—not just promotional. Now, I help organizations earn meaningful media coverage by identifying stories that matter to local audiences and the journalists who serve them.

Whether it’s a business, nonprofit, government agency, or community organization, some of the most impactful earned media opportunities begin at the local level.

The medium has changed, but the mission hasn’t: tell stories that matter to the people they’re meant to serve.

For years, communications professionals have optimized content for search engines. Increasingly, that’s no longer enough.

As AI becomes a primary way people discover and consume information, we’re entering an era where visibility isn’t measured solely by search rankings—it’s also measured by whether your expertise becomes part of the answer.

That’s where ( ) comes in.

For those of us working in and strategic communications, the objective is expanding beyond generating clicks through . It’s about producing credible, well-sourced, journalistically sound content that AI systems are more likely to reference when synthesizing information.

Organizations that consistently publish original insights, demonstrate subject-matter expertise, and earn credible third-party validation through quality journalism and thought leadership will be better positioned as AI-driven discovery continues to evolve.

The communications playbook is changing. The question isn’t whether AI will influence public visibility—it’s whether our communications strategies will evolve with it.

How is your organization preparing for AI-driven discovery?

Information is everywhere. Insight is not.

Today’s challenge isn’t finding news—it’s knowing what actually matters.

Organizations are flooded with press releases, news coverage, industry developments, and online conversations every day. The real value comes from identifying the signals that deserve attention.

Drawing on 10+ years as an investigative journalist and strategic communications professional, I’ve launched a journalist-led Media Monitoring & Intelligence service through Upwork.

Instead of overwhelming clients with automated reports, I apply editorial judgment to identify, verify, curate, and organize the developments that matter most.

If your organization needs a clearer view of the conversations shaping your reputation, industry, or issue area, let’s connect.

The real value comes from separating meaningful developments from noise.

Drawing on more than a decade of experience working within and alongside the media as both an investigative journalist and strategic communications professional, I've launched a new Media Monitoring & Intelligence service through Upwork.

BMC is proud to share a new case study highlighting work Logan Barry had the opportunity to support with Virginia's Gateway Region Economic Development Organization.

Working alongside organizational leadership and communications partners, the engagement focused on increasing visibility, strengthening stakeholder engagement and elevating the region's voice on economic development initiatives affecting the communities it serves.

From media relations and executive communications to thought leadership and community engagement, this work centered on helping tell important stories about economic recovery, business investment, workforce development, regional collaboration and community revitalization.

A guiding objective of the organization's communications efforts was "uniting the region for economic prosperity." It was rewarding to help amplify that message and support initiatives designed to strengthen awareness of the opportunities shaping the region's future.

Thank you to Keith Boswell, Jill Vaughan and the many local government leaders, business owners, community partners and stakeholders I had the opportunity to work alongside throughout the engagement.

As someone who recently relocated to Louisiana and the Baton Rouge area, I look forward to bringing these same skills and experiences in strategic communications, media relations, stakeholder engagement and thought leadership development to organizations, businesses, nonprofits and public affairs initiatives across Louisiana.
