The exquisite art of India is being showcased at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. For the first time since 2012’s Maharaja: The Splendors of India’s Great Kings, the VMFA will highlight India’s Great Mughals: Art, Power & Opulence (May 9-August 23 2026) in the Altria Group Gallery.
Curator for South Asia at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Emily Hannam, and Dr. John Henry Rice, who co-curated memorable South Asian exhibits including Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment and Tsherin Sherpa: Spirits, have masterfully brought India’s Great Mughals to its first stop in North America to Richmond, VA. Throughout the spring/summer, patrons can also immerse themselves in themed events and programs like concerts, wine tastings, curator’s talks and dancing to celebrate the artistic brilliance of India’s Mughals.
The exhibit itself showcases 200 sumptous objects including intricate paintings and manuscripts, lavish textiles, architectural elements, metalwork, arms and armor, and dazzling precious stones. Experiencing the layered nuance of light design and music of the exhibit transports you back to the century (1556-1658) when three of India’s most celebrated Mughal emperors ruled. From the tiniest jeweled objects to the monumental wonder of the Taj Mahal, this highly sophisticated and globally connected empire produced treasures of unparalleled splendor.
