We don't come around here much lately … thankfully, been working and working and tending that grindstone. But a little blast from the past is a pretty good reason to come around. Especially when it's Cade Martin Photography … Cade played no small part in making this come together and making it as good as it is over at the labor of love, Sunrise Ocean Bender. Deep and wide thanks to Cade, always.

“ … a monumental creation, an album that refuses to blend into anything approaching either deafening polemic or simple background noise … Seek it out, and pay attention. It’s worth it.”—Goldmine Magazine

“…JuJu fuses elements of psychedelia, glam, prog and post-punk into a propulsive, melodic art rock. Valenti describes JuJu’s self-titled debut long-players as “my personal tribute to the big music I’ve always loved, regardless of genre.” But the album also has a more serious intention, sourcing the refugee crisis as its primary inspiration: ”Where I live in Sicily, we literally see children die among the waves.” For Valenti, the music and words “conspire with ancient symbols and arcane memory, something buried deep in the collective unconscious of the Mediterranean, to give voice to a ‘drowning’ culture.””—MOJO Magazine

My first album cover.

As a photographer, I never know what is coming around the corner, and I love it.

I’ve known Kevin McFadin at Sunrise Ocean Bender Records and Fan Works Design for more than a minute, and I was more than happy to collaborate on an album cover.

Thank you Kevin. Thank you Gioele Valenti aka Juju

Hi kids, happy Tuesday,

“ … as Janet Hansen wrote in the note accompanying her choices, “I must admit—book cover design was not much on my mind this year (!), but this was a great exercise to reflect on what we do and whose work we admire. As designers we have this little power to propose what visual goes with these great stories, and in our current climate that is both exciting and no easy feat. I’m so excited to see how cover design changes from the ripple effect that this monumental year has created.””

It may actually be mandatory at this point to begin any kind of 2020 roundup with an acknowledgement of how s**t the year was, and how impossible it was to focus on the good parts, and how anything…

“A project which evolved from the now defunct radio show You, the Night and the Music on Sine FM in Doncaster, Woodford Halse is now a tape / CD label which brings you the best in electronic, psychedelic, experimental and folk sounds.”

“ … 18 young designers spent eight months conducting interviews with various designers from the MENA (Middle East and North African) region, shining a light on the underrepresented talent in the vast geographical area. As a result of the students’ efforts, the class decided to create a magazine, gathering the 70 interviews across 14 different MENA countries in a bilingual, non-profit visual culture magazine titled Makhzan Magazine.”

Big, big thanks to University of Virginia Magazine for letting K lend a hand to the latest …

“I think the phrase ‘never forget’ may be more important than ever,” says William L. Charron (Law ’98), who co-chairs the art law practice at Pryor Cashman in New York and teaches art law at UVA’s law school. “And these cases certainly help you remember.”
