May is supposed to be an exciting time for college graduates and their families...a month of celebrations - the culmination of 4 years of hard work, sleepless nights, 10 page papers, final exams, and a little fun in between.
But now, graduates are grappling with landing their first job in an uncertain job market. The article below outlines the current economic climate with nearly 2 million college grads joining the search for work.
I have several clients living out this scenario right now. Applying for hundreds of jobs and not one bite. They look good on paper, but may lack some real-world experience. But how do they get that experience without someone taking a chance on them?
I lived this nearly 20 years ago. With a degree in Journalism & Media Studies...I thought I was going to be Diane Sawyer! It didn't turn out that way, but I have carved out a meaningful career filled with twists and turns.
Here is some unsolicited advice for the college grads out there.
1. Know that you are not the only one feeling anxious, frustrated, and defeated. This to shall pass.
2. Pound the pavement everyday. Start your day with a purpose...shower, get dressed, and check all the job sites in the morning - Indeed, LinkedIn, etc. etc. Apply away. You can also look for an "in" at the companies you are applying for. Does someone in your network work for the company or is there a connection? Ask them to send it in for you (even if you already applied online!) It is still about "who you know."
3. Network. Be humble. Send emails, LinkedIn messages. Go to events. Sit in Starbucks with your laptop...let people know you are looking to get into X type of career. Talk to your parents and their friends. What do they do for work? Who do they know? Work that extended network. Meet people for "informational" coffee meetings.
4. Keep your mind right. Get a part-time job (even if it isn't in your field) to stay sharp, make money, and network. We don't know how long it will take to find your first gig. Time is money! Go make some while you apply and interview for full-time jobs.
5. Don't be afraid to take a paid or unpaid internship...even as a college graduate. Get some experience and bulk up that resume while you look for something full-time.
6. Don't give up. And don't feel like your first job is the end all, be all. It is a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Take every opportunity as a chance to build up that resume, learn new skills, and meet new people!
