Motion Control – Solenoid Driver Module from Magnetic Sensor Systems is Energy Stingy!

Motion Control – Solenoids – Driver Module

Motion Control – Solenoids – Van Nuys, CA – Magnetic Sensor Systems (MSS) Has released the SDM840 Solenoid Driver Module as a complement to their Series of Solenoids and those of other manufacturers that includes: Tubular, Open Frame, Low Profile, Hinged Clapper, Latching, and Rotary Solenoids.

This compact, quiet 20 kHz pulse width modulated driver module measuring just 1.65 in. x 2.50 in. is designed to consume less energy by first applying the voltage for a pre-determined period of time necessary to activate the solenoid and when the plunger is seated, drop the voltage to a level sufficient to hold the solenoid in the seated position conserving energy and avoiding overheating the solenoid’s coil.

This also allows smaller solenoids to be used when a large force at a long stroke is required by applying high voltage to the solenoid providing the necessary force to pull the plunger in, then dropping the voltage down to maintain the plunger in place.

Designed to operate with a supply voltage of 8 to 40 VDC at a peak current of 20A, the SDM840 Solenoid Driver Module has a Command or Trigger Voltage of 2 to 40 VDC. Having a Trigger is especially useful when using solenoids requiring higher voltages and the command voltage is lower such as a TTL signal. The readily available options for Pick Time is 100, 250 and 1,000 mSec, while different values for Pick Time can also be provided. After the plunger is seated, the factory setting for the holding voltage drops to 30 percent of the supply voltage, however the holding voltage can be adjusted by the user via an on-board potentiometer.

Mounting is facilitated by four 0.15in. diameter holes at the corners of the circuit board, and Screw Terminal Block for electrical connections are for: + and – DC voltage, + and – Trigger voltage, and the Solenoid.

How Could You Use These ... ...High Precision Linear, Pitch, Roll, and Yaw Positioning Stages Featuring Four Motor Options?

The new Motion Control XGGR 50-10-15-60 Series of Four-axis Linear, Pitch, Roll, and Yaw Stages from OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.) is the integration of a Linear-axis stage, two Goniometer Stages, and a Rotary Stage. The lower Linear axis stage has 50 mm of travel. The Pitch-axis is a +/- 10 degrees Goniometer, the Roll-axis is a +/- 15 degrees Goniometer, and the Yaw-axis (upper -axis) is a 60 mm diameter rotary stage capable of continuous rotation. These compact four-axis Linear, Pitch, Roll, and Yaw stages feature four motor options to meet the precision and speed of travel requirements of an application.

Depending on the levels of precision and speed of travel requirements, four motor options are available. The Stepper Motor Driven Stage (-01 option pictured and in video) has k***s at the back of the stepper motors for manual adjustments. With a 10 microsteps-per-step motor driver the repeatability of the stepper motor stages is +/- 0.01 degrees and travel speeds of 30 degrees-per-second (yaw stage) and 14 degrees-per-second (pitch and roll stages) can be achieved. Option -02 is driven by Three Phase-Servo Motors with Quadrature Optical Encoders, and option -03 is Brushed DC Servo Motor Driven with Quadrature Optical Encoders. The servo driven stages (-02 and -03) in a closed loop offer the highest precision and travel speeds. The -04 option is Stepper Motor Driven with Quadrature Optical Encoders for position verification.

These four axis stages are the ideal choices for: Optics, laser scanning and pointing, drilling and machining, identifying crystals, estimating hyperspectral bidirectional reflectance, aligning mirrors, reverse engineering, inspection, assembly, measurements, tracking, and positioning, and manufacturing quartz oscillator plates.

The rotary axis has a precision pattern of threaded holes for mounting tooling or fixtures and is equipped with a HOME switch to signal the motion controller for initial HOME positioning. The goniometer (pitch and roll) axes are equipped with positive and negative limit switches to signal the motion controller that end of travel is reached. The Goniometers and Rotary axes have calibrated scales for visual inspection.

Each of these stages can be ordered with a fully plug-and-play compatible multi-axis motion controller, joystick or trackball and keypad for any motor combination from OES.

Motion Control – Rotational Voice Coil Stage
Quickly and repeatably steer an optical beam with a diameter of up to 25 millimeters over 90° with 25 microradians of resolution!

Motion Control – RVC-9025 Rotational Voice Coil Stage: Up to 25mm wide mirror; Controllable positioning over +/-45 degree optical; 5 arcsec (25 microradians) optical position repeatability; 1 degree optical step-and-settle in less than 5ms; Fully integrated servo controller; USB 2.0 and auxilary user electrical interfaces; X 58 x 28 x 21 millimeters, 30 grams

motion control - Rotational Stage

Forestville, CA – Motion Control – The RVC-9025 Rotational Voice Coil Stage provides a means to quickly and accurately set an angular position. The frequency is factory adjusted to customer specifications during the manufacturing process. Amplitude of the resonating mirror can be adjusted through either an analog input voltage or the USB interface.

motion control - miniature stages

An optional high-resolution position feedback sensor can be monitored by an analog output signal on the User Connector.

The RS-25 Resonant Scanner can also be configured with a high-resolution 16-bit Analog to Digital Converter to quickly sample and report the mirror position at any moment if the position sensor is included.

The RVC-9025 Rotational Voice Coil Stage provides a means to quickly and repeatably steer an optical beam with a diameter of up to 25 millimeters over 90° with 25 microradians of resolution. The RS-25 Resonant Scanner is designed and optimized for applications that typically require a means to scan an optical beam. Using various patent pending features the RS-25 Resonant Scanner can run 24/7 forever without compromise. At the heart of this product is a pair of carefully designed flexures that mimic the spring in a classical spring-mass harmonic motion system. The mirror or other load acts as the mass and together a natural resonating frequency is borne that provides unparalled performance and reliability. A small motor is carefully coupled to the system to makeup for small system losses that would otherwise dampen the oscillation.

The Mirror: The mirror is an integral part of the motion control RVC-9025 and is usually specified at time of order. The mirror and its associated inertia will largely predict the overall step and settle time of the actuator. With that in mind the user should careful consider parameters surrounding the mirror including its shape and flatness. The mirror should be no wider than absolutely necessary and sufficiently long to accommodate the beam elongation as a consequence of the tilting process. Mirror flatness will largely dictate its thickness and overall inertia. In special cases, mirror thickness and its affects on inertia can be managed using costlier materials such as beryllium that have a higher specific stiffness. As the mirror thickness grows, its front surface will proportionally move further off the rotational axis which in some cases can be undesirable. Other parameters including coating and scratch/dig need to be included to fully describe the mirror. While a mirror is probably the most common payload other customer supplied or specified loads can be used such as gratings.

motion control - miniature rotaqtional stage

Position Sensor: The RVC-9025 is able to position its mirror with a resolution of 25 micro-radians in a large part because of the high-resolution sensor it uses. The analog nature of its non-contact sensor also makes it noise limited by adjusting its bandwidth. Careful control and optimization of the sensor signal permits the servo to operate at a higher bandwidth and thereby having a higher stiffness and exceptionally low positioning wander or hysteresis.

Voice Coil Motor: The RVC-9025 includes a high efficiency voice coil motor–somtimes referred to as a single phase DC motor. The motor coil is directly coupled to the mirror support beam and position sensor. That tight and rigid coupling of the load, actuator and sensor assures exceptional position repeatability and step-and-settle times. The high efficency of the motor coil yields a small and light-weight coil that adds little of the overall motion inertia.

Integrated Electronics: The RVC-9025 includes a highly miniaturized servo amplifier and controller. The mirror position can be controlled through either the USB and its 16-bit DAC or an analog input signal. At the same time mirror position can be monitored from and analog output or the USB and an optional 16-bit ADC. The auxiliary input header also provides a means to enable the amplifier and monitor it for faults. Thereby supporting a configuration for a deeply embedded and autonomous device.

Motion in XYZ-Theta – Select XTREME 6000, Full Ceramic Radial Bearings from CERAMICSPEED for Extreme Environment Applications!

Motion in XYZ-Theta – Full Ceramic Ball Radial Bearings

E. Longmeadow, MA –Motion in XYZ-Theta – The XTREME 6000 ZrO2 Series of Full Ceramic Radial Bearings from CeramicSpeed are designed to provide levels of performance in extreme environments beyond the capabilities of steel and even hybrid bearings. The complementing components of these bearings were carefully selected to provide the highest levels of performance in high temperatures, and adverse environments such as: Submerged in water, high pressure steam, chemicals, and caustic fluids.

The outer and inner races of these bearings are meticulously crafted from zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). Zirconium dioxide is exceptionally tough and has heat expansion properties closely matching those of steel for easy integration into new or existing applications.

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) was selected for the bearing balls as it can achieve the highest possible smoothness and roundness. The standard bearing cages are PTFE. Optional PEEK (Polyether ether ketone a thermoplastic polymer), cages with a high melting point can be specified as well as PTFE or PEEK shields. The combination of zirconium dioxide races and silicon nitride balls create a bearing with a very low coefficient of friction that are able to operate with very little or no lubrication. In extreme environments (high temperature, submerged, and corrosive atmospheres) they are unmatched in reliability, performance, long life, and efficiency.

XTREME 600 ZrO2 bearings in comparison to steel are lighter, nonconductive and nonmagnetic, with a much lower coefficient of friction than steel or hybrid bearings, and Silicon nitride (Si3N4) balls will not spall. Applications include: Medical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, maritime, industrial, food, dairy and beverage.
