6 homepage mistakes that cost local businesses real money

1. Hours, prices, or menus saved as images — unreadable to Google and to screen readers
2. A photo slider nobody waits for (slide 2 has never been seen by a human)
3. No city or service area in text anywhere on the page
4. "Contact us" as the only button — give people a reason and a next step
5. Stock photos of people who obviously don't work there
6. Loads in 8 seconds on a phone — most visitors are gone by 4

If you fixed only #1, #3, and #6, you'd be ahead of half your competition.

Do's & Don'ts of asking for reviews

✅ Do ask at the moment of the compliment — "glad it worked out, would you mind saying that on Google?"
✅ Do make it one tap: text them the direct review link, not "find us on Google"
✅ Do reply to every review, good and bad — future customers read your replies
❌ Don't offer discounts for reviews — it violates Google's rules and reads fake anyway
❌ Don't send a mass "please review us!" blast to your whole list in one day — a sudden spike looks bought
❌ Don't panic over one bad review — a 4.8 with 60 reviews beats a 5.0 with 4

Usually one of three reasons, in order of likelihood:

1. Your site doesn't say what you do or where you do it. If the words "metal roofing in Washington, Iowa" (or your version) appear nowhere on the page, Google has to guess. Google doesn't guess in your favor.
2. Your Google Business Profile is doing the heavy lifting badly. For local searches, the map results outrank websites. A thin profile buries you.
3. You're competing for the wrong phrase. You won't outrank Home Depot for "metal roofing." You can absolutely own "metal roofing supplier near [your town]."

It's almost never "the algorithm hates me." It's almost always fixable.

3 things I'd fix on most local business homepages this week

1. Your hours are in an image. Google can't read a JPG. Neither can half your visitors on a phone. Put hours in actual text.
2. No phone number above the fold. If someone has to scroll or hunt through a menu to call you, some of them won't.
3. The first sentence is about you, not them. "Welcome to our website, family-owned since 1987" — nobody searched for that. They searched for a problem. Lead with the problem you solve.

None of these cost money to fix. All of them cost you money to ignore.

5 Don'ts for your Google Business Profile (I see these every week)

❌ Don't leave "Products/Services" empty while your competitor lists 40 items
❌ Don't let a customer question sit unanswered for 8 months — it's public
❌ Don't upload 3 photos from 2019 and call it done
❌ Don't ignore the Q&A section — anyone can answer for you, including wrong
❌ Don't buy reviews — Google's gotten good at catching it, and the penalty isn't worth the shortcut

Your Google Business Profile is your real homepage for local search. Treat it like one.

The honest answer: it depends less on a percentage and more on your math.

If a new customer is worth $2,000 to you over a couple of years, and it costs you $150 in ads to get one — spend more. That's a machine that prints money.

If you don't know either of those numbers, *that's* the actual problem. And it's fixable before you spend another dollar on ads.

Start there: what's a customer worth, and what does one cost you today?

Marketing changes fast enough that keeping up is itself a job. Small-business owners are doing that job at 10 p.m.

Our pitch is simple: that's our job. We keep up with the tools, the channels, and what actually converts — and we do the setup right the first time, fixed scope, fixed price, confirmed in writing.

You work with the person doing the work. And then you get back to yours.
