We’re headed to ACCT!

Some of the best conference conversations happen between the sessions when people start comparing notes on what’s happening at their institutions, what’s getting harder, and what they’re trying to move forward.

Those are the conversations we’re looking forward to.

If you’ll be at ACCT too, come say hello. We’d love to hear what’s happening on your campus and what’s been on your mind lately.

We’ll see you there. 👋

A high school student takes a college course. Then another. They earn the credits, learn the campus, and get to know the college.
Then they graduate, and many never enroll.

Did they all go on to a four-year university or another college? Not all of them. Many simply stop.

Why does a student who has already succeeded at a college stop at the moment it should be easiest to continue?

As a field, we have worked hard to make college affordable, and that work matters. But paying for college does not tell a student why they are there. A transcript does not give a student a reason to come back.

There is an earlier question too: are the students who belong in dual enrollment ever learning it is an option?

These are the questions behind The First Mile Study, a national study of what colleges do, from a student’s first interest in dual enrollment through the first college term, to make the career ahead visible and worth pursuing.

Your process map might be wrong.

Not because someone built it wrong. Because somewhere along the way, the workaround became the process.

In the next episode of The Debuzzwording of Higher Ed, we’re getting into process mapping and the gap between how the work is supposed to happen and how it actually happens.

The extra email. The unofficial handoff. The person everyone knows to call. The step that exists nowhere on paper but somehow keeps everything moving.

If you want to understand the student experience, start there.

🎥 New episode coming soon.

Camp Merry Class of 2026, reporting for duty. 🎄⛺

We’ve shared the playlists, introduced the pets and debated the holiday movies. Now, we’re wrapping up Camp Merry with the people behind it all: Team Swim.

This week gave us a chance to recharge together before helping our clients navigate the holiday madness through creating thoughtful experiences, keeping every detail moving, and bringing a little extra magic to the season.

The holiday spirit is officially high. The team is ready. Camp Merry 2026 is one for the yearbook. 💙

Camp Merry has officially gone to the dogs. And the cats. 🐾🎄

For Day 3, we’re introducing a few of the four-legged members of Team Swim who take their holiday responsibilities very seriously.

Their qualifications include supervising calls, inspecting packages, testing the coziness of blankets, and providing moral support.

Swipe through to meet the pets of Camp Merry. Then tell us: does your pet get in on the holiday festivities, too?

Camp Merry Day 2 has one very important question: What’s on your holiday playlist? 🎶🎄

We asked Team Swim what songs officially signal that the holiday season has arrived, and the answers did not disappoint.

Some are classics. Some are newer favorites. And some may reveal just how early certain members of our team start listening to holiday music. 👀

Swipe through the Camp Merry Playlist, then tell us: What song are you adding?

Welcome to Camp Merry 🎄⛺

Before holiday season officially takes over at Swim, we have an important piece of business to attend to: getting ourselves sufficiently festive.

Camp Merry is our annual spirit week and our excuse to turn up the holiday cheer as our team gears up for the projects, ideas and plenty of merry-making ahead.

All week, we’re sharing a little bit of what makes the holidays feel like the holidays around Swim, from the songs on repeat to the movies we refuse to skip and a few four-legged campers along the way.

Consider this roll call. Camp Merry Class of 2026 is officially in session!

What happens when you stop assuming you know the student experience and actually go through it yourself?

After working with Swim for more than 15 years, Dr. Tonjua Williams remembers doing exactly that. Together, we stepped into the student experience. We encouraged her team to apply to their own institution using fictitious student profiles and follow the process from application to enrollment. We walked alongside them through what they uncovered, looking at each step through the student’s experience.

What they found was hard to ignore.

Students could go three to four months before receiving an acceptance letter. Rules and processes meant to move students forward were slowing them down instead.

Her realization: “We are really leading students out of the college and not into the college.”

So they changed it.

With a clearer view of what students were actually experiencing, the institution changed its onboarding process, shortened the time to enrollment, and saw enrollment increase.

Sometimes the problem isn’t hidden. You just have to experience the process from the other side.

Higher ed has plenty to say. So why does so much of it sound the same?

Student-centered. Innovative. Career-focused.

The problem isn’t that these words are always wrong. It’s that they’ve been used so often that they rarely tell people anything meaningful about the institution, the work, or the student experience.

That’s why we’re launching The Debuzzwording of Higher Ed, a new webinar series about getting the buzzwords out of the way and saying what we actually mean.

We’ll unpack the language higher ed has gotten comfortable with, why it matters, and how to replace it with writing that is clearer, more specific, and actually describes the institution, its work, and its students.

The buzzwords have had their turn. It’s time to say something real.

🎥 The Debuzzwording of Higher Ed is coming soon. Stay tuned.

If there’s a story to tell, a reason to celebrate, or an excuse to turn dinner into a full-blown theme, Devon is probably already on it.

As Swim’s Director of Marketing, she brings that same mix of curiosity, creativity, and fun to the way we share our work with the world. Get to know Devon a little better below.

What’s your favorite part about leading the marketing efforts at Swim?
Getting to take all of the really smart work happening at Swim and figure out how we tell that story in a way that actually feels human. Higher ed can get very jargon-heavy very quickly, so I love finding the simple, interesting way into the conversation.

What’s something your teammates can always count on you for? Making everything a holiday. We finish a big project? Celebrate. Pumpkin spice lattes are back? Celebrate. We work really hard, and I think there should always be room to actually enjoy what we’re building and celebrate the people doing it. 🙌 🥳

What’s a small thing that brings you an unreasonable amount of joy? Trying a new recipe from some random cookbook. I love picking something I’ve never made before and just seeing what happens. Bonus points if I can turn it into a whole themed dinner.
