Last fall, I had a discovery call with a brand I genuinely admired in my community. After proposing my strategic mapping process, the diagnostic work I do at the start of every engagement to understand a brand's challenges and purpose, they asked for references.
I get it. References matter, especially in certain industries. And I have them, including clients in their exact sector.
But here's where I hesitated: My strategic mapping isn't the implementation work. It's the process that reveals what needs fixing. Asking for references before even letting me assess the situation felt less like due diligence and more like a trust issue from the start.
So I didn't provide them, and walked away from the potential engagement.
It felt like a power play, and I kept thinking: If we're already navigating this dynamic before I've even identified your challenges, what will the actual working relationship look like?
Shortly after, I landed an incredible client with 3 offices to streamline, and no barriers, just alignment and trust from day one.
But I still think about that moment.
So I'm genuinely curious: Would you have provided the references?
Am I overthinking this, or is trusting your gut about client dynamics part of protecting your process and peace?
Drop your thoughts below because I'd love to hear how you navigate these early relationship tests.
