Appalachia Press

Appalachia Press Fine Letterpress Printing / Design At Appalachia Press, we honor the labor and elegance of past traditions.

Our printmaking is a union of art, historical traditions and modern design. With the commonality of computers, we forget the origins of type and how images are created. Silkscreen and Letterpress are antique printing processes and have roots that go back five-hundred years or more. John Reburn has been a working artist for over 30 years. Trained at Arizona State University and Otis Art Institute,

he worked in Los Angeles for most of his career. Specializing in printmaking and design, he has worked for entertainment companies including Disney, Universal, and NBC; non-profit organizations such as Bet Tzedek, the Larry King Foundation and the Tiger Woods Foundation; and designed posters for Broadway theatrical productions, musicians, comedians, and live event venues. Appalachia Press produces letterpress stationery and ships to over 150 stores nationwide. Interesting design projects and wholesale inquiries welcome.

After a long day of pressing the cards by hand - we then add embellishments! Lots of tinting but sometimes adding a rhinestone or ribbon. And that’s before scoring, folding, packaging, and pricing.
There’s a lot of hand labor in every single piece of our stationery! It makes a difference and it’s worth it. With 300 designs in our catalog - we keep busy!
(Usually there’s music pumping but copyright on the socials is an issue.)

One of the many reasons I love blanks! Blanks - an industry term for cards with no words or greeting. It allows for the sender to be creative and opens the design to personal interpretation.
This design has been a party invite, a birthday, and even a drunken apology card. Smart, inventive folks love our paper and we love them!

A wonderful project started over a decade ago - revisited for the Taubman Museum of Art’s spring Women’s Luncheon.
We letterpressed cards using the architect’s original sketch - ballpoint pen on a cocktail napkin! What a fantastic image…and a great table gift.
Coming soon to the Taubman’s gift shop!

Our PBS short film The Printmaker is an 2X Emmy Nominee!
I’m so happy the talents of Jacob and Sara are recognized - it was a beautiful and insightful piece!

We’re incredibly honored to share that PBS Appalachia has received 9 Emmy nominations this year!

These nominations recognize the hard work, creativity, and passion of our entire team and the powerful stories of Appalachia that we’re privileged to tell every day.

Among this year’s honors are nominations from the National Capital Chapter for the prestigious Overall Excellence and Technical Achievement categories, along with recognition for projects like Hometowns and The Printmaker: The Quiet Work of Appalachia Press, just to name a few.

To everyone who watches, supports, shares, and believes in our mission: Thank you! These nominations belong to our communities just as much as they belong to us.

We’re proud to continue sharing the voices, culture, and stories of Appalachia with the world!
