The best leaders I met this week had one thing in common:

They were comfortable saying,
"I don't know. Tell me more."

Not because they lacked confidence.
Because they were confident enough to learn.

The leaders making the biggest impact today:
🏀 Ask better questions.
🏀 Make decisions.
🏀 Build relationships.

Simple lessons that have powerful results.

Who is the most curious leader you've worked with?

Fun fact from this week

I went to Vermont to speak at the Vermont Health Care Association conference and somehow left with a leadership lesson from Ben & Jerry’s 😂

While touring their headquarters, it hit me:

People remember experiences more than information.

Honestly, it’s true in almost every part of life.

Nobody remembers every slide from a presentation.
Nobody remembers every sentence from a meeting.
But people absolutely remember how you made them feel.

That applies to leadership, parenting, sales, customer service
 everything.

Also, driving through “the notch” in Vermont felt like leadership too:
beautiful, unpredictable, a little stressful, and full of sharp turns.

This week’s 3-Pointer Friday newsletter is one of my favorites so far:
“What Ben & Jerry’s Taught Me About Leadership.”

Hot take: Referees are the introverts of sports. And we run the whole game. 😄

No one's chanting our name. No one's putting us on a poster. But when we make a call, everyone stops and listens.

That's the quiet power of introverted leadership.
If you've ever felt like you had to be "more" to be taken seriously as a leader, watch this. I think it'll change how you see yourself.

Nobody talks about how overwhelming leadership feels when you’re the newest person in the room
but everyone still expects you to have the answers.

New executives are stepping into environments where the pace is fast, the stakes are high, and every conversation feels important. Most aren’t looking for more motivation.

They’re looking for clarity.
Confidence.
And practical ways to lead under pressure.

That’s exactly what we focused on this week at the Vermont Healthcare Association conference.

One attendee shared this with me afterward:

“You nailed every problem I’m dealing with plus gave me solutions I can’t wait to put to work.”

That’s why I believe leadership training has to go beyond inspiration.

People don’t need another keynote full of theory.

They need tools they can actually use when the pressure shows up Monday morning.

Nobody talks about how exhausting leadership becomes when every decision feels urgent.

Every day leaders are navigating staffing shortages, difficult conversations, team conflict, family expectations, financial pressure, and the weight of knowing their decisions impact real people.

This week I had the opportunity to open the Vermont Healthcare Association conference speaking about leadership under pressure and why the best leaders learn to slow their mind down before they speed their team up.

That’s why I teach leadership through the lens of a referee.

Officials don’t get perfect information. We don’t get replay reviews in real life. We have to read the play, make the call, communicate with confidence, and move forward.

The same is true for leaders.

One attendee told me afterward:

“You nailed every problem I’m dealing with plus gave me solutions I can’t wait to put to work.”

🎯That’s the goal every time I step on stage.

Not just inspiration.

Practical leadership tools people can actually use Monday morning.

Grateful to the VERMONT HEALTH CARE ASSOCIATION INC for the opportunity and for the work their members do every single day.

Most leaders don’t lose the room because they get challenged. They lose the room because they get defensive.

Earlier this week, while speaking at the Options Home Care Conference, I was reminded of something I’ve learned over and over again as a basketball official: when someone challenges you publicly, your response becomes the lesson.

The instinct is to protect yourself, explain harder, or try to win the exchange. But strong leaders do the opposite. They stay composed, respect the person, and deliver value to everyone watching.

That’s the theme of this week’s 3 Pointer Friday:

When Someone Challenges You in Public, Don’t Defend, Deliver.

Whether you’re leading a team meeting, handling a frustrated client, or presenting in front of a room, pressure does not create leadership. It reveals it.

The room is always watching. Make sure your response teaches the right lesson.

This month, I’m working coast to coast with leaders from Vermont to Washington.

Different organizations. Same challenge:

Decisions don’t get easier under pressure.
But leaders can get clearer, faster, and more confident.

That’s the work.

Appreciate the continued trust from state associations and leadership teams bringing me in this month.

Select summer and fall dates are still available.

The fastest way to stay stuck is to only take advice from yourself.

As a referee, I have learned that you cannot make the right call if you refuse outside perspective.

The same is true in leadership.

We all have blind spots. We all have areas where our communication can improve. We all need people around us who are willing to tell us the truth, challenge our thinking, and help us get better.

The best leaders are not the ones who think they have all the answers.
They are the ones who are coachable enough to listen.

Who is in your corner helping you make better calls?

Grateful for the opportunity to spend time with the team at Insight Memory Care Center leading a workshop on leadership and customer service.

A key theme from our session was simple but important: how we engage every person matters. No matter their relationship to the organization, every interaction shapes trust, culture, and the overall experience people have with your team.

We also talked about how the way we present ourselves in each interaction makes a difference with residents, families, coworkers, supporters, and community partners alike.

I appreciated the engagement from the entire Insight team and the commitment to creating a strong experience across every part of the organization.

Thank you to the team for the warm welcome, and to leadership for investing in this important conversation.
