I've got some great book recommendations for you as we head into October!

Fallow by Sarah Anderson was one of my favorite recent reads. This novel asks: what if a company was in charge of your pregnancy and your body, but you were extraordinarily well compensated for it? What could possibly go wrong? 😳 The protagonist, Natalie, is the first ever corporate surrogate and is contractually obligated to birth 7 children over 10 years, with a 6 month "fallow period" in between each pregnancy. The book is an absolutely wild ride, with a major twist and a second half of the novel radically different than the first. I highly recommend it!

Raising Demons by Shirley Jackson -- For an upcoming episode of my podcast, It's a Lot, I'm reading (and rereading) some of Shirley Jackson's work! Raising Demons is her second memoir of the chaotic experiences of motherhood. In this second one, her husband is even more useless than in the first, and I was constantly amused by her kids and her parenting style, while simultaneously furious at her husband for doing literally nothing to help her, ever. It's also fascinating to see what parts of parenting still feel the same from the 50s to now, even if they look different in 2026!

Somehow we are already on week 3 of my 7th semester of teaching at University 😱 This is the largest section of my social media class that I've ever taught, and it's a very engaged group so far! I'm loving hearing about my students' early social media experiences, their perceptions of phenomenons like BookTok, and their opinions on pop culture.

Last week, I also had the opportunity to lead another workshop for Rochester Youth Year on Social Media for Nonprofits & Building Your Personal Brand 🤓 The AmeriCorps VISTAs are doing great work in our community, and it's always a pleasure to meet each new cohort and answer their questions about effective marketing for nonprofits.

How is it September already?! 😱 The summer FLEW by! Here are some of my favorite reads from August:

The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy by Andrea Dunlop & Mike Weber -- This was hard to put down! It's a fascinating look at some horrifying cases of Munchausen by proxy, and the wild lengths these mothers went to in order to deceive everyone around them, gain attention, and harm their children 💔 I learned a lot about Munchausen by proxy and the lack of protections in place for kids who might be in terrible situations like this.

Tiny House, Big Love by Olivia Dade -- If you're looking for something lighter, Tiny House, Big Love is an entertaining, funny novella about two best friends searching for a tiny house on a reality TV show (it's for the female protagonist, and she's moving away and her male BFF is trying not to let it show how crushed he is that she's leaving town), and trying not to fall in love as they squeeze into tiny spaces together and support each other unconditionally 😅

Ashley and I met during our sophomore year of college and worked together on a research project about people's writing traumas and how they impacted their feelings about writing 🤓 It was so fun to have an in-depth conversation with Ashley over a decade and a half later (🤯). We talked about her career as a therapist, abusive workplaces, how AI is causing issues that therapists now need to figure out how to deal with, what it was like for her to be a stand-in mom figure when she became the guardian of a younger sibling a few years ago, and much more.
