Ashley and I met during our sophomore year of college and worked together on a research project about people's writing traumas and how they impacted their feelings about writing πŸ€“ It was so fun to have an in-depth conversation with Ashley over a decade and a half later (🀯). We talked about her career as a therapist, abusive workplaces, how AI is causing issues that therapists now need to figure out how to deal with, what it was like for her to be a stand-in mom figure when she became the guardian of a younger sibling a few years ago, and much more.

The new episode of It's a Lot is out now wherever you listen to podcasts! 🩷

Happy August! If you're looking for one more excellent read this summer, here are some of my favorite books I read last month:

πŸ‘‰ Please Look After This Bear: How Paddington Became British by Melanie Ramdarshan Bold & Aishwarya Subramanian -- This is a deep, thoughtful, and fascinating look at Paddington the bear and how he went from being a refugee to a British icon. Why is he treated so differently from actual refugees? In what ways does the Paddington universe honor and acknowledge his refugee status? The authors do a fantastic job examining the world of Paddington--and our real world--from many different angles. One of my favorite chapters was about the Windrush generation in the UK (people arriving from Caribbean countries to help rebuild post-war Britain from the late 1940s through the early 1970s) and Calypso music, and how Calypso music is used throughout the first Paddington movie to note the feeling of being an outsider in a place that isn't quite as perfect and welcoming as you expected.

πŸ‘‰ Boys Weekend by Mattie Lubchansky -- This fun graphic novel features a trans final girl protagonist on the worst boys weekend imaginable. It takes place on an island in international waters where there are fewer rules than Vegas and you can hunt your own doppleganger, go to a raging party in a submarine, etc. It goes pretty off the rails in a delightful way and does an excellent job critiquing and satirizing capitalism. It's also a great reminder that you don't have to hold onto old friendships anymore just because you've been friends for a long time--especially when your friend is making no effort to keep getting to know who you are now and doesn't try to support you in any meaningful ways, either.

Really proud of the newest episode of It's a Lot! Had a very honest, heartfelt conversation with Mai Nguyen, author of Cleo Dang Would Rather Be Dead, about grief, empty platitudes, moving forward through something devastating, and finding ways to hope again 🩷 Social media definitely pushes us to speak in extremes, to think in black and white, but there is so much space in the messy middle. We can feel two conflicting emotions at the same time! Grief and joy can coexist!

Listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts. I recommend checking the content warnings first (find them in the show notes). We talk about heavy topics in detail, but there is levity and fun too!

I met Kelly through our work on the Cameron Community Ministries Board many years ago, and was so happy we had the chance to work together again! I really enjoyed researching and crafting a social media strategy for The Hoekelman Center, where they're doing some amazing work with community partners to make neighborhoods healthier 🩷

Thank you, Kelly, for the awesome testimonial!

I read a ton of wonderful books in June! If you're looking for a great summer read, here are some of my recommendations:

POT SHOT by Laura Piper Lee -- This romance has so much heart and depth to it! I absolutely loved it. Chronic illness rep, a man having to atone for his sh*tty behavior, trauma, healing, and a relationship you truly want to root for πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Plus, Laura Piper Lee knows how to write humor! This book made me laugh often.

THE LEAF THIEF by Alice Hemming, illustrated by Nicola Slater -- For those looking for something fun to read with little ones, my two-year-old has been loving THE LEAF THIEF. It's silly and makes us both chuckle every time.
