Meet our March Feature: The Longcore Family

From the outside, the Longcore family looks like many others in Rockford, with sports practices, orchestra concerts, evening walks through Townsend Park, and friendly waves exchanged with neighbors. But inside their home is a story that has grown into a movement, now reaching thousands of students and families with a life saving message.

At the center of that movement is Embracing Imperfections, a nonprofit founded by Rockford resident Shandy Longcore. The organization’s mission is to help eradicate teen su***de by fostering connection, reducing stigma around mental health, and helping people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Meet our February Feature: The Edwards Family

The Edwards family didn’t choose Rockford as a destination—they chose it as a center of gravity. It sits at the crossroads of their work, friendships, and extended family, with loved ones both north and south. While they once thought they’d live in Grand Rapids forever, Rockford quietly pulled them in. An off-market home in the Heritage Park neighborhood led to something they hadn’t expected: a street full of people who showed up for one another.

Meet our first feature family of 2026:

If you’ve spent any time around Rockford long enough, you know some families don’t just live here they help define the heart of the community. The Wilke family is one of them.

Andrew and Alicia Wilke have called Rockford home for the past 16 years, raising their three kid in a place that has shaped their family in countless ways. From classrooms and sidelines to band competitions, volunteer events, and neighborhood campouts, the Wilke family is deeply woven into the rhythm of Rockford life.

As we wrap up 2025. Let's take a look back at some of our feature families this year.

Meet our October feature: The Loney Family & Tapestry Rockford

On a chilly afternoon in January of 2024, the basement of Shawn Marie and Chad Loney’s Rockford home looked more like a small department store than a family storage space. Clothing racks hung from the ceiling, shoe shelves lined the walls, and bags of gently used children’s clothes filled every corner. What started with a handful of hand-me-downs for her two boys had quietly grown into something larger. “I didn’t know exactly what I was creating at first,” Shawn Marie said. “I just knew there was a need, and I wanted to fill it.”

That need became Tapestry Rockford, a volunteer-run community hub that provides free clothing, shoes, sports equipment, and school essentials to children and teens. Her hope is simple, that Tapestry will become a long-lasting thread in Rockford’s own tapestry of care, continuing to grow and adapt with the community.

As she reflects on the whirlwind first year, Shawn’s words are filled with both gratitude and determination. “Tapestry has taught me that even the smallest act of kindness can ripple outward,” she explained. “Every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and cared for. That’s what drives us.” In the end, Tapestry is about more than racks of clothing. It is about weaving connections between families, schools, volunteers, and neighbors. It is about creating a fabric of community strong enough to carry its children, one thread at a time.

Meet our December Feature: FOOD HUGS with Chef Jenna

In Rockford, the holiday season has a way of bringing the community’s heart to the surface. The lights go up along Main Street, families gather for the tree lighting, and neighbors offer simple gestures that mean more this time of year. Kindness doesn’t need a headline here. It’s just what people do.

That’s what makes Food Hugs feel right at home in Rockford.

Created by longtime resident and restaurant owner Jenna Arcidiacono, Food Hugs began as an idea during the height of the pandemic and has become something bigger than anyone expected. A movement powered by meals, generosity, and the belief that food can have a reach far beyond the table.

As we approach the holidays, Jenna has a message for everyone:
“Don’t wait to be asked. If you know someone is struggling, do something. Bring soup. Drop off groceries. Leave a note. Even an hour of your time could mean everything to someone.”

And perhaps most importantly, from Jenna’s heart to yours:

“Fill the world with random acts of love and kindness because everyone is fighting some kind of battle we don’t know about.”

That’s the heart behind Food Hugs. And that’s the heart of this town.

Meet our November Feature: The Brace Family

When you meet Tom and Lindsey Brace, it’s easy to understand why their story feels so connected to the heart of Rockford. They both grew up in Rockford and are now raising their own family here. For the Braces, joy comes from community and connection. “For us, happiness comes from having a community that allows us to have valuable relationships, that is one of the greatest sources of joy.” Grounded in purpose, anchored in home, and always choosing connection over convenience, the Brace family is a beautiful example of what makes Rockford such a special place to live.

Learn more about their story in our November issue.

Meet our September Feature: The Klobucher family.

The joy they’ve found in Rockford comes from both giving and receiving within their community. “God has been so good to us, and we want to use that goodness to bring Him glory,” Mike says. “Our hope is that others feel encouraged to step into serving, too.”

It’s that outlook, faith-driven, family-focused, and community-minded that makes the Klobucher family such a special part of Rockford. Whether they’re leading a workout at Rogue River CrossFit, cheering on their kids at sporting events, or organizing their next fundraiser, one thing is certain: their story is just one more example of how strong families make strong communities.

We are always looking for families to feature, if you are interested or would like to nominate a family, we would love to hear from you.

Meet our July Feature:

Jessica and Dan Heeringa have called Rockford home for over two decades, but their story began long before that. High school sweethearts who met as teens at the Kent Career Tech Center, they’ve now been married for 24 years, raised two boys, restored a historic home, and become deeply rooted in the community they love so much.
