We are updating our company policy on the em dash. The em dash, the em dash! Before 2022, few knew what it even was. For those of you who still don't know, this is a dash: - and this is an em dash –.

Sidenote: It's amazing our human eyes can distinguish between two dashes that are only a millimeter apart in length.

Anyway, AI-generated content can't help itself, it's in love with the em dash. We update ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, others –– the em dash is still stubbornly there.

We prompt-shout: "enough with the em dash! Remove the em dash! Never again use the em dash." But it returns, in defiance. Who's really in charge here?

We used the em dash before AI. Since then we've avoided the em dash, replacing it with a colon here, a dash there, the comma, or just ending the sentence with a period – we've even desperately turned the em dash into the semicolon from time to time.

All is to say we have embraced a new strategy reflected in our new policy: more em dashes. Many more. Use them all the time. Every time. When it makes sense. When it doesn't. Here's an example of how we can do this:

"All is to say – we have embraced a new strategy – more –em–dashes–. Many more–use them all the time–every time–when it makes sense – when–it–doesn't.–"

It's time to get a little em dash crazy. Put a space before one – after one – and then no spaces–at all–and one even right before the period–. After the period.–

Point is, let's get a little human. Something AI will never be.
