After many years of effort, a group of Southern Oregon vets are in the final stage to have a replica of the Vietnam Wall from Washington DC constructed right here in the Rogue Valley. It will be the only replica with all of the names on it west of the Mississippi River. They are trying to raise funds to prepare the future site and install the wall.

Wordpress 5.4 is scheduled for release at the end of March. This is a major update.

Start preparing for the release by making a back of up your entire site, including its plugins, themes, and database. Although new Wordpress versions rarely have any major problems, it’s best to be safe.

Before installing the new new version, make sure your plugins are compatible. You may want to delay updating Wordpress core until the plugin developers have time to update and test their plug-ins for compatibility.

You may have to upgrade your hosting to use PHP 7. If you do need to update your version of PHP, check with your web developer or hosting provider. It is important to keep your Wordpress site up-to-date to keep it running smothly and protect it from hackers.

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) go into effect on January 1, 2020. For your small business website, it means you will have to to tell consumers upfront about what data you collect and how it is used. Even if your business is not in California, this law applies to you if you sell to Californians — or even display a website in the state.

The easiest way to comply is to add a privacy policy to your website. A privacy policy is page that informs visitors what information you collect and what you do with that information. For guidelines on what to include on your privacy policy, see this article:

Anything that has personal information - your name, address, phone number, social security number, or financial information - is fodder for identity thieves. Destroy it by shredding or burning.

If you brought your computer to Office Depot or Office Max for PC Health Check, you may have been scammed. The FTC is reporting that these companies falsely told customers their computers were infected with malware requiring repair services of up to $300. The companies has agreed to pay the FTC $35 million which is expected to be used to provide refunds to defrauded customers. No details on how to get refunded is available yet.

Owners of ecommerce sites are potentially affected by the recent Supreme Court ruling that allows states to start requiring collection and payment of sales tax for Internet sales. Many states already have new tax rules in place.

WordPress 5 version is scheduled for Dec. 6th. If your websites runs on WordPress, this major update is a BIG deal. Whole number updates (going from 4 to 5) have many changes which can cause issues on your site.

Before installing the WP 5.0 update, check to see if your theme and the plugins you depend on are compatible with 5.0. Also make sure you have current backup of both DATABASE and FILEs.

My advice is to wait until after the holidays when things have calmed down and you have more time. Waiting also has advantage getting the early bugs worked out so when you do install, it will be more stable. A Street Web can help you upgrade to WordPress 5. Give us a call.

I've been getting a bunch of junk calls from someone claiming to be from "Medicare Supplements Services". These callers may claim to represent Medicare, Social Security, or an insurance company. This time of year, during the Medicare open enrollment period, you, too may be getting these calls. And they call you over and over, like they've been calling me. If you do get them, HANG UP. Don't let them trick you into revealing private information such as your Social Security Number or even your birth date. Remember, Medicare will NEVER call you to get your to update your information.

Here's a blackmail scam email I got today. If you got one of these, it is safe to ignore it. They haven't hacked anything; it is just to scare you. Still it is a good reminder to use strong passwords and change them regularly. And keep the security apps on all your devices up-to-date.
