ON THIS DATE IN COUNTRY MUSIC – JUNE 4

As heard on Highway 64 with BIG AL at 6:22 a.
m. this morning.....

Today is June 4th, and here's a look back at some memorable moments in country music history.

Born on this day in 1922 was Canadian entertainer Gordie Tapp, best known as a longtime cast member of the television favorite Hee Haw.

Also celebrating birthdays today are songwriter Bill Mack, whose song "Blue" became one of LeAnn Rimes' signature hits, and Freddy Fender, remembered for classics including the number one hit "Before the Next Teardrop Falls."

In 1960, Patsy Cline appeared on the popular television program Ozark Jubilee, helping bring country music into homes across America.

On this day in 1969, Johnny Cash released At San Quentin, one of the most influential live albums in country music history and a landmark recording in his legendary career.

Country singer-songwriter Kasey Chambers was born on this day in 1976. She would go on to become one of Australia's most successful country artists.

In 2001, acclaimed songwriter and musician John Hartford passed away in Nashville at the age of 63. Hartford was known for his mastery of the banjo and fiddle and for writing the classic "Gentle on My Mind."

In 2002, Kenny Chesney's album No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems reached Gold and Platinum status, fueled by hits including "The Good Stuff," one of the biggest country songs of the year.

On this day in 2011, a house fire destroyed Trace Adkins' home, but thankfully all family members escaped safely.

And in 2022, Zach Bryan was sitting at number one on the country albums chart with American Heartbreak, the major-label debut that helped launch him into country music superstardom.

I'm Big Al, and that's On This Date in Country Music, here on Highway 64.
