Sheriff Kyle “Matt” Moore and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office invite everyone to the 1st Annual Community Block Party at the Jackson River Sports Complex.

🏍️ The Joy Ride begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Jackson River Sports Complex and returns around noon, with lunch following.

🏍️ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 — PATRIOTS MC RAINES RIDE TO GIVE POKER RUN

The Patriots MC Raines Ride to Give Poker Run gets underway Saturday at Alta Station, I-64 Exit 161.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with the last bike or vehicle out at 11:00 a.m.

💵 Registration is $25 per rider and includes an event T-shirt and commemorative poker chip.

🚙 All vehicles are welcome — motorcycles, cars, trucks, Jeeps and all makes and models.

The ride ends at Greenbrier State Forest, Picnic Shelter #1 in Harts Run, West Virginia, with the last bike or vehicle in at 4:00 p.m.

There’ll also be a 50/50 drawing, Bug Splat Contest and whole-hog BBQ after the ride.

Proceeds support the Patriots Motorcycle Club Christmas & Scholarship Fund.

Good morning! It’s BIG AL, and it’s time for another collection of stories proving that some days, reality writes better material than we ever could.

Here are today’s Stupid News Headlines & Good News!

🧵 COULD YOU DO IT WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS?

Quick question: If somebody handed you a thousand bucks and said, “Change this flat tire right now — and no YouTube,” could you do it?

A new poll asked Americans how confident they are doing some everyday tasks without instructions.

Cooking white rice? Seventy-three percent say they could definitely do it.

Changing a baby’s diaper? Sixty-seven percent.

Sewing on a button? Sixty percent.

But changing a flat tire? Only 39 percent say they could definitely handle it.

Another 20 percent flat-out admitted they definitely could NOT.

So apparently, as a nation, we're considerably more comfortable dealing with a dirty diaper than a flat tire.

Although depending on the diaper... I'd take my chances with the lug nuts.

🤯 COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT WASN'T SO COMMON

People online have been sharing facts they somehow made it well into adulthood without knowing.

Penguins are birds — not fish.

Pineapples grow from plants on the ground — not trees.

Pickles are cucumbers.

Chicken tenders are short for chicken tenderloins.

And The Beatles isn't just a funny British spelling of beetles — the name is a play on the word “beat.”

Here's another one: Ponies are NOT baby horses. A baby horse is a foal. Ponies are their own type of horse.

And apparently somebody needed to learn that reindeer are actual animals — not just Santa's employees.

Somewhere out there, an adult just learned at least one of those things.

And they're pretending they knew it all along.

🍽️ ARE YOU THE FAST EATER IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

Here's a potential source of relationship trouble you may never have considered:

How fast you eat.

There's new discussion about “eating-speed gaps” between couples — when one person inhales dinner while the other takes their sweet time.

Experts say a big difference in eating speed can create friction if the slower eater feels rushed, or the faster eater gets up from the table while their partner is still eating.

But it doesn't necessarily mean you're incompatible. Different eating speeds could simply reflect different personalities and even create some balance in the relationship.

So the important thing is apparently being respectful.

In other words, if your spouse is still enjoying dinner, don't sit there staring at their plate like you're waiting for them to surrender the leftovers.

🤖 WHO COSTS MORE — YOU OR A ROBOT?

If you're worried a humanoid robot might eventually take your job, here's something that could make you feel a little better.

They're not cheap.

A report looked at a two-legged humanoid robot from Agility Robotics. The robot itself would reportedly cost about $200,000, plus a $20,000 deployment fee and roughly $36,000 a year for software and maintenance.

Over an expected five-year useful life, that's around $400,000.

Of course, robots don't need vacation days, health insurance or retirement benefits.

But they can break down.

So maybe the next time your boss complains about your salary, just remind them:

“At least you don't have to reboot me.”

🔊 VIRGINIA & WEST VIRGINIA ARE AMONG AMERICA'S QUIETEST STATES

This one caught my attention.

New research looked at transportation data and average noise levels to determine America's loudest and quietest states.

Texas came out as the loudest, averaging more than 80 decibels.

But on the quiet side, Connecticut ranked number one, followed by Vermont, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Then comes West Virginia at number five.

Virginia also landed among the ten quietest states at number nine.

So here in the Two Virginias, apparently we're doing pretty well in the peace-and-quiet department.

Unless, of course, BIG AL is on your radio.

Then all bets are off.

🚔 STUPID CRIMINAL: VACATION SOUVENIR GONE VERY WRONG

An Italian man recently visited Florida and apparently decided the usual souvenir T-shirt wasn't enough.

When he returned home, authorities reportedly discovered the head of an endangered crocodile hidden inside his luggage.

The dried crocodile head had allegedly been wrapped in ordinary wrapping paper.

Italian authorities seized it and placed the traveler under investigation for allegedly smuggling a protected species without the proper documentation.

If convicted, he could reportedly face a substantial fine and possibly jail time.

So today's travel tip:

Coffee mug? Fine. Keychain? Fine. Endangered crocodile head? Leave it in Florida.

❤️ AND NOW… SOME GOOD NEWS!

We've got two this morning.

An off-duty NYPD officer spotted a vehicle run a red light on a busy Brooklyn street and realized the driver was unconscious.

The officer jumped through the window, got the vehicle into park, pulled the driver out and began CPR — potentially saving the driver's life while also preventing a dangerous situation on a busy street.

And when he was asked about what he did?

He basically said he was just doing his job.

And finally, Marine veteran Weldon Bowen in Texas recently had a pretty simple request as he prepared to celebrate a major milestone.

He wanted 100 birthday cards for his 100th birthday.

Instead, he got more than 4,000!

Bowen enlisted in the Marines in 1945, and after his birthday request went viral, people made sure his 100th birthday was one he'll never forget.

One person stepping up when a stranger's life was on the line... and thousands of others stepping up to honor a veteran on his 100th birthday.

And THAT is some Good News.

💛 A Personal Message From BIG AL — World Su***de Prevention Day

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

And this one is personal.

2026 marks ten years since life almost got the best of me.

That's not an easy sentence for me to write, but it's an important one.

Ten years later, I'm still here.

I'm here to wake up every morning. I'm here to laugh. I'm here to love. I'm here to make mistakes and have bad days. I'm here to see things I never would have seen, meet people I never would have met, and experience moments I couldn't have imagined back then.

And I'm here to talk to all of you every morning.

If you've listened to me for any length of time, you know I don't only share the funny parts of my life. I've shared true-life stories, struggles, mistakes, difficult days and some of the battles I've faced along the way.

I don't share those things for sympathy.

I share them because I want each of you to know there can still be hope and peace on the other side of a really dark day.

Sometimes when you're standing in the middle of the storm, it's impossible to imagine what life might look like ten years down the road.

I understand that in a way I wish I didn't.

But I'm incredibly thankful that I got the opportunity to find out.

That's why today I'm asking you to check on your people. Really check on them.

The person making everybody laugh may be struggling. The person who always says, “I'm fine,” may not be fine. Sometimes the people who appear to have everything together are carrying things nobody else can see.

And if you're the person struggling today, please hear me:

Your life matters. You matter.

Whatever you're facing right now does not have to be faced alone. There is no shame in saying, “I need somebody.”

And I want you to know something else.

If you need someone to listen, if you need some guidance or suggestions about where to find help, I'm here. Always.

I may not have all the answers, but I'll listen. And if I can help point you toward someone or someplace that can help, I will.

Please don't be afraid to reach out.

Today, I'm grateful I got to live them.

And if sharing my story gives even one person enough hope to stick around and discover what their next ten years might hold, then every difficult story I've shared has been worth telling.

Your story isn't finished yet.

Take care of yourself. Take care of each other.

And remember, I'm here. Always.

Motorists traveling Route 159 North near Moss Run Road and Route 665 East should be prepared for potential delays due to an active bridge construction work zone.

🚧 TRAFFIC INFORMATION:

Traffic in both the northbound and southbound directions will be affected by alternating lane closures through the construction area.

The work zone extends approximately from mile marker 6.5 to mile marker 8.5 and is currently scheduled to remain in place through June 22, 2028.

⚠️ Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and watch for flaggers, construction crews, equipment and changing traffic patterns.
