If you want to shoot aerial video or photography, you’ve probably heard the term Part 107. But what is a Part 107 certificate and who needs one? ✈️📸
Part 107 refers to the FAA regulations for UA (unmanned aircraft) flown for commercial use. While small drones (under .55 lbs) can be flown recreationally, any commercial use needs to fall under Part 107. The FAA classifies commercial use as simply any operation that leads to compensation. Either directly or indirectly. This means that if a real estate photographer adds on drone photos “for free” without a part 107 certificate they are liable for fines from the FAA.
What are the implications to you as a business owner?
The FAA may access civil penalties up to $27,500 and criminal penalties up to $250,000 in fines. Which you could he held liable for!
These penalties are in place to protect airspace, property, and pedestrians from injuries from unmanned aircraft.
While drones have so many great use cases, it is essential to contact a professional Part 107 certified business when aerial video and photography is needed.
