It's time to Raise our Voices and Unmute the Silence behind closed doors of the realities many face related to Domestic Violence.
Sexual Coercive Control⬇️
Sexual coercive control is a continuous pattern of behavior where one person uses pressure, manipulation, guilt, or intimidation to force an unwilling partner into sexual activity. In a marriage, legal or cultural assumptions of sexual access are false; bodily autonomy remains absolute, and persistent pressure to gain compliance destroys true consent.
Sexual Trauma⬇️
Sexual trauma in domestic violence—including within marriage—is any unwanted sexual act, attempted sexual act, or sexual contact forced on a person by a current or former intimate partner through physical force, threats, intimidation, or coercion, violating their bodily autonomy and consent. Marriage does not imply automatic consent; forcing a spouse into sexual acts is recognized legally and psychologically as sexual assault.
Financial Abuse⬇️
Financial Abuse Is Domestic Abuse. Manipulating money and other economic resources is one of the most prominent forms of coercive control. Lack of access to economic resources is often why many abuse victims feel that they have no choice but to stay with an abuser. Economic barriers to leaving can result in staying with an abusive partner for longer and experiencing greater danger. Economic abuse doesn’t rely on physical proximity, so it can continue after separation. Those who finally leave an abusive partner are often left in debt or lack the financial security to rebuild their lives after leaving.
Stalking⬇️
Stalking is a serious issue affecting more than six million people each year. It can be a terrifying crime for those who experience it, and it is often one of many tactics that abusers use in order to maintain power and control over a current or former intimate partner. Being stalked by an intimate partner is a crime. When domestic violence victims experience both physical abuse and stalking behaviors, the risk for homicide is increased. 76% of all domestic violence homicide victims had also been stalked in the year before their murder. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence including stalking, call or text our 24-hour hotline at (888) 774-2900. Advocates are here to help and support you.
Psychological abuse⬇️
Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological, or technological actions or threats of actions or other patterns of coercive behavior that influence another person within an intimate partner relationship. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, or injury. Sharing unconsented intimate videos or images of a partner is considered a severe form of psychological, emotional, and sexual abuse. It is widely classified by experts and advocates as image-based abuse or non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), and it is frequently used as a tool for coercive control, intimidation, and blackmail.
