For certain industries, such as plumbers, auto repair, locksmiths, or tow trucks, it makes more sense to focus on where you’re ranking on the map rather than your website.

Yes, if your site shows up high in organic search results, you’ll get some extra calls. But the majority of leads come from searches people already do inside Google Maps.

These customers don’t care about your awards, your unique process, or any special characteristics. They just want the job done - and your rating, reviews, and service description on Maps are usually enough for them to make a decision.

Domain Age

Google says domain age is almost not a factor. In my experience, it actually matters a lot.

If your domain is fresh, just registered, you usually need to wait a couple of months before you see any rankings, even on easy keywords. There are exceptions, but 90% of the time it works like this.

On the other hand, if a site has been sitting there for 5 years with no SEO done, that’s a huge advantage. I had many clients with 0 authority and no internal optimization, but once we redesigned the site, added proper tags, headlines, and content — they started ranking in top 10 for competitive keywords even before backlinks.

Why we use Trustindex on client websites:

It’s a plugin that pulls in reviews straight from Google (and other places like Facebook or Yelp) and shows them live on the site.

What I like:

- Reviews update automatically when new ones come in.
- Keeps visitors on your site instead of sending them away to Google.
- Layouts are clean and easy to drop into a page.
- Design mimics Google - feels like native Google reviews.

What’s not so great:

- Free plan is limited (few reviews + Trustindex branding).
- Design options are basic — you can’t tweak every detail (though with a bit of CSS work it is more than enough)
- Can slow things down a bit if not set up right.

Overall, it’s fancy, trustworthy, and an easy way to show real reviews without extra work.

Last year August: ~20 calls
This year: ~100 calls

Difference: a few dozen citations, multiple "products" with the right keywords pointing to the appropriate service pages on the website, right category and description. And - most importantly - new proven process, that allowed to collect a bunch of new positive reviews.

Result: +500% calls. And for this kind of call you pay literally nothing. While these prospects are the warmest you can get.

I often hear that getting citations from business directories is a guaranteed ticket to the local 3-pack on Google Maps.

From my experience, that’s a myth. Citations can help, sure — but you won’t rank in the top 3 with just a handful of generic reviews while your competitors have hundreds (or thousands) packed with real details and the key service mentions.
