Start proactively planning for the holiday gifting season and order year-end branded merchandise as far in advance as possible. That will give you the best chance of securing the products you desire when you want them.

It may seem an odd exhortation given that summer hasn’t even officially started, but it’s smart advice.

Why? Because the supply chain issues that have triggered rising prices, inventory shortfalls, longer production times and related issues within our industry appear here to stay for 2021 – and potentially into 2022.

The supply chain challenges, which are affecting virtually every industry and which in general are beyond the control of promo suppliers, have the potential to worsen amid the Q4 sales crush, possibly exacerbating stock scarcity and delays in order fulfillment.

Indeed, the autumn run-up to year’s end is traditionally our industry’s busiest time as clients order items to gift to employees and their own customers. That means increased demand on already stressed industry stock levels could intensify, making it harder to find first-choice products and alternatives when those are depleted.

Y2K. Remember that? The Year 2000 problem--or anticipated problem--because twentieth-century software often represented the four-digit year with only the final two digits—making the year 2000 indistinguishable from 1900. No one knew what problems might ensue at the stroke of midnight. At Tivoli (later acquired by IBM), select employees worldwide were required to stand by in case of emergency. No one was very happy about being forced to work New Years Eve, 1999, so we developed a gift basket of impending doom gifts--a bucket for emergency water rations, a comfy sweatshirt for lack of heat, a Maglite for failed electricity, a soup mug, and in the meantime, for boredom, a puzzle, stress reliever with the sound of crashing glass, a deck of cards, and silly putty. All were adorned with the Tivoli logo and the campaign logo Survival 2000. When midnight arrived with no incident, a split of champagne, flute, and party horn were enjoyed by all.
