School Culture is the behavior you tolerate.
It is not the Core Values posted on your school website.
It is not the inspirational poster in the staff lounge or the mission statement in the handbook.
It is what happens when you think nobody is watching—when the doors are closed, the cameras are off, and the parents aren't around.
Your best teachers don’t leave because of salary (though pay matters).
They leave because of the gap between what you say you stand for and what you actually allow.
They lose faith the moment they realize:
1. You see the problem.
2. You complain about the problem (in meetings, emails, or behind closed doors).
3. You still refuse to fix the problem.
That problem usually isn't a mystery.
It’s the veteran teacher who is allowed to belittle students or colleagues year after year.
It’s the dysfunctional grading or discipline process everyone has to work around because “that’s how we’ve always done it.”
It’s the chronic under performer (admin, teacher, coach, or support staff) you’re too conflict-avoidant or “nice” to address or remove.
High-performing educators hate hypocrisy more than they hate long hours, paperwork, or challenging students.
They don’t quit teaching.
They quit the hope that leadership will actually lead.
What are you “tolerating”today that contradicts the values on your school walls or in your district vision statement?
What’s you Culture?
