May is approaching, and my Camino plans are warming up! My dog, Gypsy, and I are walking 150 miles from Sacramento to Point Reyes to learn more about conservation and how to help the heroes that honor our resources. Oso will give Gypsy breaks on the road.
I've already met the wonderful people at Yolo Basin Foundation and the Putah Creek Council. Volunteering for both gave me a peek into their world and wanting to help more.
There are more non-profits and businesses (like Green wineries) on our path, and I'm excited to meet them all.
Point Reyes is a monthly destination for me. I backpack, kayak, and awe at the stunning wilderness, sand, and waves. The Point Reyes National Seashore Association provides impressive access to learning and volunteer opportunities, and I plan to work for them someday. However, I wish I could tug the map and pull the ocean, birds, and elk closer to home. Instead, Limantour Beach became a natural destination for my Greenhouse Camino.
Here are two straightforward marketing tips: One, be where your audience is. And two, know what they do.
Tip number three: If you can immerse yourself in your audience's world while walking your dog through the California wine country en route to the ocean, do it.
Here's the plan: Next May, Gypsy, my daughter's dog, and I will stroll down our street the same way we begin any morning walk. But, this time, we'll keep going. Past Davis, south of Berryessa, until we're leapfrogging the Napa Valley, town-by-town, and reaching Limantour Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore in about two weeks.
Our Camino will be a remarkable journey. But don't confuse it for a vacation. The adventure is the perfect new market jumping in point. So I'll select an organization representing each leg of the 130-mile trek, beginning with the Yolo Basin Foundation and ending with the Point Reyes National Seashore Association.
From this tour:
I'll take advantage of docent-led outings, hearing directly from the experts from each organization.
I'll volunteer my hands, feet, and back for tasks needed in the field.
I'll add to my understanding of conservation and build on my thirty years of marketing experience.
Finally, I'll turn that knowledge back into service.
The empty pie pan on my desk says Thanksgiving's over. It is the perfect time for a walk!
