Every small business owner knows there are a lot of moving parts behind the scenes. At JCDM, some of those parts happen to have four legs.

While her contributions mostly consist of sleeping through meetings, supervising snack breaks, and "protecting" the office from delivery drivers, morale simply wouldn’t be the same without her.

Meanwhile, Twila continues overseeing operations from an undisclosed location while contributing absolutely nothing to payroll.

Workdays are simply better when they're around.

May officially marks *seven* years in business, and somehow I just purchased my first branded coffee mug in February. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd be lying if I said I always love being a business owner. I'd also be lying if I said I knew what it felt like to be able to check out on weekends even when I was working for someone else. Prior to owning my first business, I was in a job with terrible boundaries that required me to do it all, all the time, with one low salary and no benefits except one paid week off during the year.

When I think of that experience, I appreciate the anguish that I sometimes go through as a business owner...the unexpected slow months, the unexpected busy months... the (at times) overall unpredictability of it all. Getting to choose who I work with also means less moments of people coming into my office to scream at me because they hate the color of the towels we bought. (I wish that was a joke.)

There are way less "sexy" moments of being a business owner than Entrepreneur or Business Insider magazine want you to believe. But I can at least say I love the work I get to do, and I feel privileged to have survived six years as a solo business owner thus far.

So, happy SEVEN years JCDM. I'm not sure where the future leads yet, but I'm happy to evolve with it.

The best brands make people say: “Ohhhh. I get it.”
That’s the goal.

Not confusing people with jargon or making them work to figure out what you actually do. They make it easy for the right people to instantly understand who you help, how you help, and why you’re different.

When people immediately understand your value, they’re far more likely to trust you, remember you, and take the next step.

Strategic branding isn’t about sounding more impressive. It’s about simplifying the complexity so that your message finally clicks.

A lot of impact-driven founders downplay their expertise because they don’t want to sound “too salesy” or too confident. They soften their messaging, avoid talking about results, and make themselves smaller to feel more comfortable.

But your brand and website should clearly communicate your value, not water it down. The people who genuinely need what you offer can’t work with you if they don’t fully understand how you help them.

They're clear about who they help, what makes them different, and the value they bring. That clarity builds consistency. And consistency builds trust.

Stop wasting marketing dollars on strategies that don't work.

Here's the truth:
Without strategic brand clarity, you're guessing… which platforms to use, what message will resonate, who your ideal client actually is.

With strategic brand clarity, you KNOW…. exactly who you’re talking to, what message attracts them, where they hang out.

This isn’t magic, but it does lead to marketing that actually works.

In a past job as a marketing director, the company was spending $15K annually on marketing that really did nothing for them. We didn't increase the budget. We actually decreased the budget, and we got CLEAR on the strategy. The result was an increase in profits the following year and attracting the clientele that actually needed (and wanted) the services most.

One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that you have to keep redoing it every time your business grows.

You don’t.

A strong brand is meant to be your foundation- not something you constantly replace. It’s what people recognize you for, how you position yourself, and the way you communicate your value.

What does evolve as you grow is everything built on top of that. Your website gets refreshed, your marketing gets refined, your messaging gets sharper. But the core of your brand? That should stay consistent.

One of the biggest transformations clients experience isn’t visual.
It’s confidence.

Before brand clarity:
• explaining their business feels messy
