If you run a law firm, you know how expensive it is to compete on Google Ads. Legal keywords are some of the most expensive, and every firm is bidding on the same terms.

Our new guide looks at a different way to compete: digital PR.

Instead of paying more for clicks, you earn coverage in news outlets that builds trust with potential clients, Google & LLMs, and results in increased visibility across the web.

We cover how to build campaigns around your practice area, when to launch them, and how to measure results.

Last week, our client received a contact form submission: "We're overrun with ground squirrels. Can you help?"

The referral source: ChatGPT.

This lead asked AI to find a pest control company in the Bay Area, and it pointed them to our client.

We didn't pay for that placement. We built service pages that answer the exact pest control problems homeowners have, so AI models have something relevant and accurate to cite.

This is one of a few referrals the client got from AI assistants over the last two weeks.

Background check content isn’t the easiest niche to grow on YouTube. The audience is narrow, and the topic isn’t naturally engaging.

But the last 28 days told a different story for one of our clients:

• Views: 2,118 (+128% vs. previous 28 days)
• Watch time: 39.6 hours (+69%)
• Impressions: 11,000 (+30%)

We’re not doing this for views alone.

We use YouTube to reach people actively looking for background check services, build trust, and create content that shows up on the 1st page of Google results, including AI Overviews.

One survey. 50 angles. 33 media placements. 22 from DR 70+ sites.

Last month, we surveyed 3,000+ people to figure out the beaches with the most well-mannered visitors, and turned that into 33 media placements.

We ranked beaches based on:

→ Cleanliness
→ Noise levels
→ Personal space
→ Consideration for others

From there, we broke the data into 50 state-level angles and handed journalists stories they could easily localize for their audience.

This campaign landed links in:

→ Mass Live, MA - DR 81
→ Wicked Local, MA - DR 80
→ The Providence Journal, RI - DR 80
→ Asbury Park Press, NJ - DR 79

and many more

It also picked up some social engagement (one Facebook post received 300+ reactions, 30+ comments).

Takeaway:

You don’t need 50 campaigns to get national coverage, but you need one strong idea with local angles.

Getting mentioned in Google's Map Pack (top 3 local results) is hard.

Local businesses in the top 3 spots usually have more reviews, stronger citation profiles, and a longer presence in the area.

That makes it difficult for new or growing businesses to replace them. But it can be done.

Right now, we have clients in the Map Pack:

• Paving client in Santa Cruz
• Restoration client in the Niles/Chicago area
• Pest control client in the Bay Area

They are there because of consistent local SEO work: building citations, earning reviews, and improving service pages over time.

If you're trying to get into the Map Pack, contact our team for a free consultation.

"Background check California," hospital background check," and "background check compliance" - these are three searches (out of many) where our client is cited in AI Overviews.

Our client's site shows up in front of people searching for background check services, before they even scroll down.

In many cases, users only read the AI answer. If your company isn’t featured there, you’re missing most of the visibility.

We track and report this weekly for our SEO clients, so they can see which queries they appear in and how that visibility grows over time.

Just because your cost per click is low doesn't mean you won't get any leads. For our pest control client in the Bay Area, it meant the opposite.

Here's what last month looked like for our pest control client in the Bay Area:

• Avg. CPC: $7.95 (-36.3%)
• Clicks: 1,491 (+89.2%)
• CTR: 9.91% (+69.0%)
• Impressions: 15,050 (+12.0%)

They nearly doubled their clicks, cut cost per click by over a third, and reached more people.

Earlier this month, we surveyed 500 business owners and marketing decision-makers about digital PR.

Only half could clearly explain what digital PR is, and nearly 1 in 4 don’t have a documented strategy.

We turned our survey findings into a six-step framework for building (or fixing) a digital PR strategy.

While the World Cup is on, most Americans have a second team they root for.

We turned this idea into 33 media placements for our client.

We analyzed foreign-born population data across every state to map “second-team” loyalty across the U.S.

Next, we pitched both national and local media (with each press release tailored to their region).

Here’s some of the coverage:

→ KATU (Portland) – DR 78
→ The State (South Carolina) – DR 77
→ CBS 12 News (Florida) – DR 75
→ Fox 5 News (Arizona) – DR 75
→ Fox 11 (Los Angeles) – DR 74

How we made it work:

- We started with original data: a state-by-state diaspora breakdown
- We localized every angle and tied each pitch to a specific region
- We timed it right, and outreach started right before the World Cup coverage ramped up
