Today I was asked to share some basic information about Search Engine Optimization in a Facebook group in which I participate, and thought you might find it helpful also!

SEO - search engine optimization is critical for helping your business "bee found" by search engines like Google. There are several types of SEO – organic and paid. Today, I will discuss organic SEO because it is FREE and you can begin to use it today.
Basically, Google wants to provide a valuable experience for its users so that they want to use the platform. They reward websites that engage people in a helpful way by prioritizing them in the search function. Better engaging websites are displayed first. The actual measures of engagement (called an algorithm) change and Google is quite secretive in the details, so it is a bit of a mystery.

However, there are some things we DO know for sure:
• Content is critical. Having helpful content means that people will stay on your page for a longer period of time and that is one of the ways Google measures it. So, write compelling content for your pages and blog posts. Include video when you can because humans love visuals.
• Keywords are important to get a higher ranking on that first page. Most users don’t scroll through pages and pages of search results, so being seen first is very important to actually getting potential customer eyeballs on YOUR site. Google, and other search engines, crawl all over your website looking for these keywords. Use keywords for your business, city, product, and industry on every page.
• Images should have all the SEO fields completed so that Google sees them and can include them. These include Alternative text, title, caption, and description.

Recommendations:
Good news! Google loves WordPress websites and it is optimized to be Google friendly. So, start with a WordPress website.

Use an SEO plugin, specifically Yoast SEO. It is free, easy to use, and prompts you for the keywords on every page!
