“One of the things that we want for LLEAD to be is to be what it says—to lead. We want everyone to know that we're serious, and we want to engage with the community and with our members. Everything that we're doing is to show everyone that we are serious. If you have something that you want brought to discussion or a meeting, bring it to us. We want to give everybody tasks and assignments so that they feel involved.
There's a lot of people out there with great ideas, but they don't know who to tell. Or they're a little bit nervous to tell someone because the last person that they told brushed them off, pushed them aside, or didn’t think their idea was any good. We want to be the exact opposite of that. We want them to flourish with the ideas that they have. That’s why we have the committees because our goal is to be stronger for not only the group, but for the community.
We want to lead, but we also want to show young Latino people that they can be leaders, too. I strive to be the person I am. Growing up, I heard of Thomas Edison or Henry Ford, but never about Cesar Chavez or Dolores Huerta. You didn't learn about Latino leaders so you didn't learn you could be one, too.
I'm honored to be with Vanessa, Christiana and Angelo because they all have great character. They're very smart people. People like this can give younger generations goals of ‘That's what I want to be, I can do that. If they can do it, I can do it, too.’
