If you live in or have ever visited California, you’ve probably seen a triangle on a bathroom door. This indicates that it’s a men’s restroom. ADA sign specifications are a little different in California. Along with having a tactile display that meets federal ADA guidelines, bathrooms must have a geometric display mounted on the door. For men’s restrooms, the geometric display must be a 1/4-inch equilateral triangle with 12-inch edges.

The ADA symbol is actually the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA). It identifies accessible elements and spaces. The standard symbol is a blue square with a white outline of a person sitting in a wheelchair, though other contrasting colors may be used.

Many have lobbied for a redesign of the ISA. The Accessible Icon Project created a new version that depicts a more active wheelchair user leaning forward with motioning arms. However, it hasn’t been officially adopted.

ADA compliance for commercial buildings can be confusing. When a new facility is being built, this issue doesn’t arise very often. Those involved in the construction know to follow standards for accessibility. But the same can’t be said for older buildings built before the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed.

The ADA provides guidelines that U.S. organizations have to follow to ensure equal access to those with disabilities. However, some are partially or fully exempt from ADA requirements. For example, religious organizations and facilities they control (like daycares or schools) don’t have to comply. Also, private clubs, private residential housing, and unoccupied spaces with limited entry (like maintenance areas) are exempt. There are even some exclusions for employee work areas.
