Canyon Falls Located in L’Anse, Michigan. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Canyon Falls is a stunning gorge and waterfall on the Sturgeon River, located about 10 to 15 miles south of L’Anse, MI, along US-41. It features a popular, pet-friendly 1-mile trail leading to a 30-foot drop and dramatic box style canyon.
The Canyon Falls Hike duration is about 15–20 minutes round trip for the main falls; 1 to 1.5 hours if you hike the full gorge trail. It is an Easy to moderate hike, mostly flat, but features some wooden boardwalks, tree roots, and rocky sections.
The Sturgeon River slides violently over a large chute of smooth black rock into a steep gorge. The path continues further downstream past multiple smaller rapids and drops, ultimately connecting to the North Country Trail for those looking for an extended 4-mile trek. Sturdy hiking shoes would be recommended for the extended trail as it does involve crossing the river. Some sections can be muddy after a rain or snowmelt. This is definitely a must visit summer trip! There are deep pools for swimming and cliff jumping!

The Closed Vacant Building of John Henry’s Antique Mall of Alpena, Michigan
After 20 years in downtown Alpena, John Henry’s Antique mall shut down in March of 2019 following the death of owner John Henry Sinclair. The large historic building, once a department store, is now for sale.
Vendors say the antiques business has slowed in recent years because younger generations are less interested in collecting traditional antiques. Items that once sold quickly now sit longer, and many dealers are moving inventory elsewhere or selling online.
People connected to the mall described antiques as a lifelong passion and expressed sadness about losing a longtime community landmark.
Local development officials believe the historic building still has major potential. They say it could be renovated into apartments, restaurants, shops, offices, studios, or other businesses that could help continue downtown Alpena’s growth.

The Abandoned Smith’s Crossing Bridge or also known as the Bailey Bridge located in Midland, Michigan.
The Bailey Bridge began as a ferry crossing called Smiths Crossing in the 1800s, connecting communities across the Tittabawassee River. A small village grew around the crossing with a railroad station, stores, homes, and a post office. After an earlier bridge was destroyed by flooding in 1904, the current steel Pratt through-truss bridge was built in 1907 by the Joliet Bridge and Iron Company.
The bridge became an important transportation link for agriculture, business, and local residents until it closed around 1980 after a newer road bridge was built nearby. Today, it is considered one of Michigan’s few remaining historic multi-span truss bridges and is valued for its rare engineering features and historical significance.
Starting in 2018, community groups and the Midland County Road Commission began restoring the bridge for public use as a non-motorized trail crossing. Once reopened, it will provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Midland and the regional trail system while preserving an important piece of Michigan history.

Aboard the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier (CV-41) Museum located in San Diego, California.
USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) is an aircraft carrier, formerly of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class. Commissioned eight days after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest aircraft carrier in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. She operated for 47 years, during which time she saw action in the Vietnam War and served as the Persian Gulf flagship in 1991’s Operation Desert Storm. Decommissioned in 1992, she is now a museum ship at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, California. (Wiki).

The specific aircraft is marked with the number 105 and features a paint scheme honoring the VF-114 “Aardvarks” and VF-213 “Blacklions” squadrons. While famously associated with the film Top Gun (which was filmed on the USS Enterprise), this particular F-14 is a static exhibit available for public viewing. (Naver Blog).
The Jet to the left is a F/A-18 Hornet in an aggressor paint scheme, often used for combat training to simulate enemy aircraft. This specific aircraft is on display on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, California. The museum features numerous vintage aircraft on its deck, including other jets like the SBD Dauntless dive bomber. The “aggressor” livery is typically used by squadrons such as VFC-13, often featuring distinctive camouflage patterns and sometimes a red star on the tail. (Alamy).
