The Progressive Era was a time of changes for many women. The women’s suffrage and the temperance movement are prime examples. Women mobilized to fight for causes they believed in, providing a natural inclination for joining. Whether that be volunteering with a club, organization, or movement, there were options for almost everyone. If there wasn’t an association in place for your particular passion, one could be created with like-minded individuals.

This 1912 photo shows one such group, the Women’s Sodality, out for a wagon ride. A sodality is a confraternity, usually very task focused and committed, and often associated with religion. The photo was taken in Pearl Lake, Holy Cross Church can be seen in the background.

How did this particular group come to be? Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake (also known as Marty), was organized in 1889. At the time a frame church was built for $1,700, and the church was called St. Lawrence. On June 27, 1894, a cyclone razed the original church building. A new church was erected and dedicated as Holy Cross on September 15, 1896. A short time later, in 1910, the first resident pastor was appointed to the parish. Soon after his arrival religious organizations, like the Women’s Sodality, were established.

The “Renaissance Fountain with Cranes” was given to the city by Bill and Virginia Clemens. At 24 feet, this is the tallest outdoor fountain in a Minnesota public garden.

There is so much to see at the Clemens and Munsinger Gardens!
