In BNI, we teach that "specific is terrific" and to get the best referrals we need to get laser focused about our target market. This is a concept that is difficult for many. "The culprit behind this everything-to-everybody approach is a scarcity mentality. This is the idea that you don't want to miss a sale, any sale, because you never know when the next one is going to make itself available." (Ivan Misner, Networking Like a Pro, second edition)

When we don't focus and become specific about or target audience, we give up the opportunity to meet our best clients and sell our best products or services because we fail to define to our referral team who they are so they can find them for us. We sacrifice our maximum profitability.

Some of my favorite advise from last nights Ask the Founder event with Ivan Misner:

• Write everything down you do in your business as though you are going to franchise it. (Advice he got from Michael Ge**er)
• Give people the big picture of what the work they are doing is going to accomplish. (Something he observed Richard Branson doing)
• You have got to have rules to be successful.
• Average = your head is in the freezer and your feet are on fire, so you are ok. That is average!
• Failures are your tuition for success. Learn from them and overcome them.
• Focus on solutions not problems. You become an expert on what you focus. Do you want to be an expert on problems?
• How do you bring people with a good attitude into your BNI Chapter? Bring people you know!
• Book recommendation: 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell
