Almond trees flower early in spring. When Vincent arrived in Arles in February 1888, there was still snow on the ground. In the white landscape, Van Gogh came across a branch of an almond tree that was already flowering. After this painting, Vincent went on to make more works with blossom.

Do you see sorrow or beauty? Van Gogh made this lithograph of Sien Hoornik, a pr******te who he lived with in The Hague. What makes this work special is that it’s not a portrait, but a personification of an emotion: ‘sorrow’. Van Gogh tried to express this feeling using bold lines and contours.
