America’s Story. Father Hugo Blotsky began his monastic life in 1956 at Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota. An ordained Catholic priest, he’s dedicated his life to providing religious and spiritual guidance to isolated congregations across the sparsely populated region, also serving the Cheyenne Diocese in Wyoming for the last 22 years. Assumption Abbey, built in 1893, has long supported itself through its ranching operation on its 2,000 acres of land, and is a landmark visible for miles on the plains.

Catholic Benedictine monastic life centers on prayer, community, and disciplined simplicity, following the Rule of Saint Benedict. The monks' daily rhythm balances prayer and work through communal liturgical prayer, private contemplation, manual labor,and study. Monks take vows of stability, obedience,and conversion of life, committing themselves to a single monastery and to continual spiritual growth.
