Know before you go! Sharing from our friends at Pinellas County:

Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources will be working with a contractor to mechanically reduce brush and vegetation in Weedon Island Preserve. The projected start date is August 5 and will last seven to 14 days.- The main objective is to reduce fuel for wildfires. The following public areas will be affected.
• Main parking lot: closed the first one to two days of the project (Aug. 5, possibly 6)
• Center: closed when the parking lot is closed. No impact on public hours expected at this time
• Weedon Drive: no closure anticipated
• Boy Scout Trail: closed for project duration
• Upland Trail, including Picnic Area 2 kayak landing: closed for project duration

The contractor will be using heavy mulching equipment (“Fecon”). This process can throw large pieces of vegetation and is dangerous to people in the vicinity. For the safety of our citizens, please do not enter any area that has signs clearly indicating “Keep Out” or “Trail Closed”. This morning I was proud to take part in a tour of the Riviera Bay Civic Association led by President Vanessa Pugliese and Vice President Courtney Stein.

In attendance was a bipartisan group of elected officials ( Ken Welch , U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor , Representative Lindsay Cross and Senator Nick Dicegli) and staff from local, state and national levels meeting directly with residents to discuss the impact flooding has on neighborhood sustainability and affordability.

I want to thank all the residents who welcomed us and shared their heartbreaking stories. One thing is for sure, these residents are the embodiment of resiliency in our community. Their commitment to their neighborhood is inspiring and I will always stand with them.

Now it's time to get to work!

🌿 Empowering Visually Impaired Youth at Weedon Island Preserve! 🌿
Proud to be part of the board supporting these efforts. Thanks to a generous $20,000 grant from the REI Cooperative Action Fund, the Friends of Weedon Island recently hosted an unforgettable day for visually impaired youth from Lighthouse of Pinellas.
A special shoutout to Bill Fehring, president of Friends of Weedon Island, whose dedication and vision made this event possible.
