A year ago, 94% of people who asked ChatGPT about a lawyer then went to Google to verify the answer.
They stopped verifying.
A new national study of 1,110 U.S. consumers found:
📉 Google use for attorney research: 86.7% → 71.9% in one year
📈 ChatGPT use: 28.1% → 41.9%
🤖 50.1% would use at least one AI engine to research an attorney
🚫 9.5% would use only AI.
No Google.
No Yelp.
No Facebook.
And the age finding surprised me most.
Consumers 45 to 60 are leading AI adoption, not the 18 to 29 crowd.
57% of consumers ages 45 to 60 would ask ChatGPT about a lawyer, compared with just 35% of the youngest bracket.
That is the group signing retainers.
So what does AI actually read before it names a law firm?
A June 2026 study logged 359 answers across five AI engines in five metros and recorded every source cited.
The results should make law firms rethink their directory budgets:
🥇 Super Lawyers: cited in 33% of answers
🥈 Justia: 20%
🔴 Reddit: 8%
Avvo: 5%
FindLaw: ~1%
