Evacuation Plans
Do not just worry about a direct hit, but anything 100 miles to our north or south.
⢠Become familiar with the storm surge maps available on the Glynn County Global Information System. This shows how dramatically the area might be impacted.
⢠Businesses are advised to start assessing their departure plans at 96 hours out from projected impact. Have a hotel reservation made, back up all computer systems and begin preparations to relocate. This is also the point at which the real estate companies and hotels are advised to begin cancelling upcoming reservations.
⢠At 72 hours from impact, assess again and continue preparations. Plan to move computer and electronic equipment to a higher location or prepare it for removal.
⢠If a voluntary evacuation is ordered, plan to leave. The SSI emergency personnel will give the order in conjunction with Glynn County Emergency Management. They will utilize the Glynn County Code Red (reverse 911) system. Your home phone should be registered but you may also want to register your cell phone number. Also the radio station 104.9 is the Glynn county emergency notification station. If you wait too long you may be faced with serious traffic issues.
⢠For any mandatory evacuation, traffic will be halted on 17 so that people departing Jekyll can do so.
⢠At 48 hours from impact, leave if you can. The earlier you leave the better.
⢠At 24 hours you should be gone. As the storm moves closer, roads will be closed due to high winds and flying debris.
⢠The primary evacuation routes are West on 82 to Waycross to Tifton. Alternate routes are I-95, 341 and Hwy 32. Depending on the path of the storm. I-95 may not be a viable option.
⢠Do not plan to stay in Waycross. There are limited hotels available. Plan to keep going to Valdosta, Tifton or further north.
We keep "hurricane storage containers" with a list taped to the inside of each lid, indicating what should go into each container.
