The Strategic Results Marketing Story

STRATEGIC RESULTS·FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2018·
FOUNDED IN 1999:

Strategic Results Marketing (SRM Agency) was born out of a passion for the small business owner’s success and talent for creating strategic visibility packaged with results, or ROI (as the corporate world calls it) in the small town of Prescott, Arizona. We were a full-service marketing agency, providing all aspects of marketing services for almost every business type you would find in small-town America. A partnership between a few friends provided the launchpad for the SRM Agency to have the confidence to quit our day jobs and build a company that could provide peace of mind to small businesses. The peace of mind came through knowing that the advertising & marketing efforts were handled AND through the regular reporting that showcased the results and return on investment. While the partnership failed to thrive, the agency succeeded in providing branding, advertising, content, websites, press coverage, and other needed talents in our local community. In 2003, the SRM Agency downsized with a move to Utah. However, the downsizing resulted in a strategic position in the online marketing world, providing much needed online visibility and capturing ROI for online businesses and coaches alike. With the onset of social media for business (mostly through LinkedIn, MySpace, and then Facebook in 2007), creating online relationships and managing online visibility quickly became an important and affordable source of business for small business owners around the world. In 2014, the SRM Agency expanded its consulting & agency services to provide online visibility services for high-end service professionals. Focused energy is spent supporting attorneys, health care professionals, and others with all things that matter in the world of online reputation: website development, content marketing, social media, organic SEO/SERM, directory listings and review sites. We develop and manage your online presence. ABOUT THE FOUNDER: MARY PAT KAVANAGH

MaryPat Kavanagh, the chief marketing strategist, has extensive experience in marketing and small business since 1989. She has owned retail businesses, restaurants, and consulting practices and has been extremely involved in her community through the local Chamber of Commerces, National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Shared Vision Network, Jaycees, and other networking and professional development organizations. In 1999, she opened Strategic Results Marketing in Arizona. Strategic Results Marketing was an expert marketing firm specializing in entrepreneurial strategizing and planning. She has since developed the “Entrepreneur’s Bottom-Line Marketing Plan”, simplifying marketing for entrepreneurs. Strategic Results Marketing has been down-sized. In 2002, MaryPat realized that she was not authentic with her business and her life. She realized in conversation one day that, although she was the single mom of 3 girls, although she was a prominent business owner in the community, although she was involved in local organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, most people who knew her did NOT know that she was a single mom. When she moved to Utah, she decided she would change some things. She downsized her business–only working with online entrepreneurs who leveraged speaking as a marketing strategy. She only worked virtually–no more busy meetings every day that required traveling all over. And now she only works with people who understand and accept that she is a mom first, passionate business owner & strategist second. Today, MaryPat develops success-driven marketing plans and offers mentoring & training programs that empower you to achieve the results you need to accomplish the goals, the mission, and the vision you know is possible! MaryPat has been featured in publications and received many awards including Jaycee of the Year (Greater Prescott Jaycees, 2000), Salt Lake City Chapter President’s Award (National Association of Women Business Owners Salt Lake Chapter, 2010), and, most recently, NAWBO Member of the Year (National Association of Women Business Owners Salt Lake Chapter, 2017). The reputation mistake that costs many SMEs the most leads is not one negative review.

It is neglect.
An unanswered review.
An outdated website.
Different contact details across directories.
Social profiles that appear abandoned.
Old photographs, incorrect opening hours or services you no longer provide.

Individually, these issues can look minor. Together, they create uncertainty.

A potential customer will may never tell you that inconsistent information caused them to choose someone else. They simply leave.

That is why reputation management should not begin when something goes wrong.

It should be an ongoing process of checking, correcting and strengthening the information people find about your business.

Your reputation is already speaking.

The question is whether it is telling the right story.

Having reviews is no longer enough.

Customers are paying closer attention to how positive, recent and credible those reviews appear.

BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey reports that consumers increasingly expect higher ratings and fresh reviews, with a notable rise in people only considering businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher.

For small businesses, the lesson is practical:
Do not wait until you urgently need reviews.
Build a consistent process for requesting them from genuine customers. Monitor the platforms that matter to your business.
Respond professionally and keep learning from the patterns in the feedback.

A reputation built steadily is much stronger than one repaired in a panic.
Your reviews are helping people decide whether to contact you before you ever know they are looking.

Reviews do more than reassure potential customers.

They also contribute to the wider collection of online signals that search engines and AI tools may use to understand your business.

Reviews can reveal:
• What customers value about your service
• Which services you are known for
• Where your business operates
• Whether customer experiences are consistent
• How recently people have engaged with you

This does not mean reviews directly “train” an AI system to trust your business.

It means that a strong, recent and authentic review profile adds to the evidence available online about who you are and what customers experience.

Reviews are no longer separate from your visibility strategy.

They are part of your reputation, your local search presence and the story the internet tells about your business.

When did you last search for your business the way a potential customer would?

Not by typing your business name.

Try searching for the problem you solve.

Ask Google or an AI tool:
“Who can help me with [specific problem] in [location]?”
“What should I look for when choosing a [service provider]?”
“Which companies specialise in [your area of expertise]?”

Then examine what appears.
Is your business mentioned?
Is the information accurate?
Do the results clearly explain what you do?
Are competitors answering questions you have not addressed?

Searching by name tells you whether people who already know you can find you.

Searching by need tells you whether new customers can discover you.

Try it today and see what your potential customers see.

If you searched for your own service today, would you find your business?
Try it without using your company name.

Search for:
• The problem your customer needs solved
• Your main service and location
• A question customers regularly ask
• “Best [service] for [type of customer]”
• “Who can help with [specific problem]?”

Then repeat the exercise using an AI tool.
Your existing customers already know your name.

Growth often depends on being discovered by people who do not.

If competitors appear and your business does not, the problem may not be the quality of your service.
It may be that your expertise has not been made sufficiently clear, useful and visible online.

SEO got your business found on Google.

AEO helps your content become the direct answer to a question.
GEO helps your expertise appear in responses generated by tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
They are connected, but they are not identical.

SEO focuses on helping search engines discover, understand and rank your website.
AEO focuses on answering specific questions clearly and accurately.
GEO strengthens the signals that help generative AI systems understand who you are, what you do and why your business is a credible source.

This does not mean SEO is dead. Strong technical SEO, useful content and a trustworthy online presence remain essential.

But ranking is no longer the only measure of visibility.

Businesses must also consider whether AI can understand, cite and recommend them.

The online visibility gaps most established businesses don't know they have.
After reviewing hundreds of business websites and profiles, the same patterns appear again and again.

Gap #1: The website no longer reflects the business.
Gap #2: The Google Business Profile is incomplete.
Gap #3: Reviews are outdated.
Gap #4: The website doesn't guide visitors to take action.
Gap #5: Messaging is inconsistent across platforms.
Gap #6: The business isn't visible in search.

None of these problems happen overnight. They happen gradually.
Which is why they're easy to miss.
But every one of them affects trust.
And trust affects conversion.

You don't need to fix everything today. You simply need to know where to begin.
Which of these visibility gaps do you see most often?

Many business owners assume their website is 'good enough.'
Until they look at it through the eyes of a prospect.

Ask yourself:
Does your website clearly explain what you do?
Does it explain who you help?
Does it explain why someone should choose you?
Does it tell visitors what to do next?
If any of those answers are unclear, your website may be creating friction.
And friction costs opportunities.

A website doesn't need to be flashy.
It needs to be clear.

If you're unsure whether your website is helping or hurting your business, let's talk.

The most overlooked marketing question for established businesses:
What happens after someone refers you?

Most business owners focus on getting more referrals. Very few focus on what happens next.

Here's the journey most prospects take today:
Someone recommends your business.
They search Google.
They visit your website.
They check your reviews.
They look at your Google Business Profile.
They visit your LinkedIn profile.
They decide whether to contact you.

Notice something? You aren't present for most of that process. Your online presence is.

The question isn't whether you're getting referrals. The question is whether your referrals are making it to a conversation.

The businesses winning today aren't always getting more referrals. They're converting more of the referrals they already have.

What do you think referred prospects look at first when researching a business online? Share your answer below.

Five things a referred lead checks before they contact you.

If you've built your business through reputation and referrals, this matters. Today's prospects verify before they engage.

Here are the five places they're looking:
1️⃣ Your Website: Does it clearly explain what you do and who you help?
2️⃣ Google Business Profile: Is it complete, accurate, and active?
3️⃣ Reviews: Not just your rating. They're reading what clients say.
4️⃣ Social Media:: Does your profile reflect your expertise and current business?
5️⃣ Content: Are you sharing anything that demonstrates your knowledge?

Your online presence doesn't have to be perfect. But it should inspire confidence. Every one of these touchpoints either reinforces trust or creates doubt.

Which of these five areas do you think businesses neglect most? Drop the number in the comments.
