You don’t get to ruin my day story!

(0:01) The other day I was at an airport eating some mediocre chicken tenders (0:05) and I went to this restaurant and I had forgotten to get like some barbecue sauce (0:09) and I had already paid for my food and I said hey can I get a side of barbecue sauce(0:13) and this waiter he goes it'll be 75 cents.

(0:16) I said dude really? (0:17) So you want me to pull out my credit card and you're gonna swipe it and you're gonna (0:20) give me two slips one for the merchant one for the customer and then and then now I have to (0:24) leave you a tip right and I could tell he was trying to make the point

(0:28) and I said okay you make your point I'll make mine all right so that's mine so he gives me (0:32) mediocre barbecue sauce with the mediocre chicken tenders and then I left him a $10 tip (0:37) and then his attitude changed real fast now he's like trying to bring me premium chicken tenders (0:42) you know what I'm saying like oh these are in the back who are these for you know (0:45) and the reason I did that isn't to just say I'm balling because you know I got $10 (0:51) and but the reason I did it is because I just wanted him to know you don't get to ruin my day

(0:56) no no I don't match the energy I set the standard I'm gonna have a great day (1:01) why you don't deserve that kind of tip for barbecue sauce that is mediocre (1:07) but God hasn't called me to match mediocre for mediocre God's called me to be generous and so (1:12) it's not about money it's about carrying a heart that says do you know what kind of person I am (1:17) I won the eternal jackpot I got something that I did not deserve I mean because I got something (1:23) that I did not deserve well it makes me want to give away to people what they don't deserve!

A LinkedIn strategy that actually works!

(0:00) I would reach out to people on LinkedIn and say, (0:02) hey, can you give me some advice? (0:04) I’m broke. (0:05) And no one replied because no one wants to give their time (0:08) to someone who needs something from them. (0:10) I was taking from them.(0:12) So I realized this strategy isn’t working.

(0:14) Let me actually dive in deeper on the person I’m wanting to learn from (0:17) and actually research their story, (0:19) learn about the things they overcame (0:21) and see if I can find something unique that is meaningful to them (0:24) and see if they’re willing to tell me about that. (0:26)

So I started emailing people differently saying, (0:28) gosh, it’s really interesting how you overcame this one challenge in your career (0:32) and you jumped to this position.(0:33) I’d really love to hear about the mindset you had (0:35) when you were facing that challenge and what got you there. (0:38) I’m not asking for advice. (0:40) I’m asking for someone to relive a story that is triumphant for them.

(0:44) And one by one, people started replying saying, (0:46) yeah, I’ll call you. (0:47) They’re buying me lunch just to tell me their story. (0:49) And I’m not asking for advice, (0:50) but they’re giving me all the advice they have through their storytelling.(0:53) And so if you don’t have money, you can be generous with your time. (0:57) You can be generous with your energy, with your questions, (0:59) and you can have a generous attitude. (1:01) You can be of service in some other way.

(0:05) And I love the way he put that, the thief of joy. It steals joy.

(0:09) If you keep comparing yourself to other people and what they’ve achieved, that act of comparison literally will steal joy from you.

(0:16) You will never be satisfied with what you have, because you will always find somebody who’s richer, better-looking, got a nicer house and that better car.

(0:23) I think what ends up happening is we focus on the one that is competitive.

(0:27) I’m going to get more followers than Lewis. I’ll show him. And I go ahead.

I’m like, Yahtzee! (0:33) But if I just look over here, I’m a loser again. That’s what I mean by winning.

(0:36) I’m like, I’m doing great.

And then I’d change what I’m looking at or change who I’m looking at.

(0:40) And I’m like, oh, it was a friend of mine who said to me, Simon, you’ve won.

Stop it. You’ve won!
