**The Tax Nobody Talks About: Funding Other People's Businesses For Free**

Fifteen years. Fifteen years of early mornings, late nights, missed family dinners, and more stress than any doctor would sign off on — and I can tell you without hesitation that the single greatest threat to this business has never been competition, never been the economy, never been supply chain problems or rising material costs.

It's theft. Polite, socially acceptable, totally legal theft.

We call it "slow pay." We should call it what it is.

I have given away more free financing to businesses that could never qualify for a loan than I care to calculate. Companies that have no problem posting on social media, buying new trucks, sponsoring their kid's little league team, loading the family up for a Disney World vacation, and flying out of the country for a long weekend — but somehow, mysteriously, cannot manage to pay an invoice that was due 90 days ago. For work they requested. Work they approved. Work they received. Work that left my shop, my payroll, and my pocket long before they ever had the decency to acknowledge the bill.

And here's the part that keeps me up at night: it's always the same ones.

The customers who pay the slowest are the ones who call the hardest. They have a rush job. They have a deadline. There's been a complication and they need us to fix it *now.* So we drop everything — I mean everything — we rearrange the entire production schedule, we push my people hard, we absorb the chaos, and we deliver. Every time. Because that's the standard we hold ourselves to.

They don't hold themselves to any standard at all.

I have sat across from men and women who owe me thousands of dollars — money I have already spent paying my employees, my vendors, my rent — and listened to them explain, calmly and without a shred of embarrassment, why they haven't paid yet. And I have smiled and nodded because I need the relationship. Because I need the next job. Because that's what small business ownership actually looks like behind the highlight reel.

What it actually means is this: I have gone without so that they didn't have to. I have stressed over my own bills because they couldn't be bothered to pay theirs. I have had conversations with my family about money that I shouldn't have had to have — because somewhere across town, my receivables are sitting in someone else's operating account collecting interest that belongs to me.

I don't have a venture capital firm backing me. I don't have investors. I don't have a line of credit with a billionaire's signature on it. I have my hands, my crew, my reputation, and my word — and I have extended all of it, repeatedly, to people who treat paying their vendors like an optional activity.

I'm not angry anymore. Angry would mean I still expect something different.

What I am is tired — and honest. Tired of being the last priority for people who made me their first call when they needed something. Tired of rearranging my life for people who couldn't find five minutes to cut a check. We are a small family business and every dollar that comes in late is a dollar that cost us something real — sleep, stress, sacrifice. That's not abstract. That's our life.

So going forward, things are going to look a little different around here. Not because I don't value the relationships we've built over fifteen years — I do, genuinely — but because I have to value my family and my team first. I should have drawn that line a long time ago.

If you've been a loyal, timely customer — thank you. Truly. You are the reason we're still standing and the reason we'll keep going. And if you know you've been on the other side of that line — no judgment, no grudge. Just come talk to me. We'll figure it out like adults.

This business was built on trust and hard work. I'd like to keep it that way — for everyone.
