3D puff embroidery (also called raised embroidery) gives that bold, lifted look—commonly used on caps and thick logos. You can do it on almost any embroidery machine if your digitizing and setup are correct.
🔹 What You Need
3D puff foam (2mm–6mm depending on height needed)
Sharp needle (75/11 or 80/12)
Strong thread (polyester works best)
Cap frame or tight hooping
Properly digitized 3D puff design
---
🔹 Step-by-Step Process
1. Digitizing is EVERYTHING
Design must be digitized specifically for 3D puff (not normal flat embroidery)
Use satin stitches only (no fill stitches)
Stitch density should be slightly lower than normal
Add proper underlay (edge run or zigzag)
Include a “cap” stitch to seal the foam edges
👉 If digitizing is wrong, puff will fail—no matter how good your machine is.
---
2. Hoop Your Material Tight
Especially for caps: no movement at all
Loose fabric = uneven puff
---
3. Place Foam on the Design Area
Start stitching first outline or tack-down
Place foam exactly where design will stitch
---
4. Run the Satin Stitches
Machine stitches over foam
Stitches should fully cover the foam (no gaps)
---
5. Tear Away Extra Foam
After stitching, gently remove excess foam
Clean edges with fingers or tweezers
---
🔹 Pro Tips
Avoid very small letters (minimum ~5–6 mm height)
Use bold fonts/designs for best effect
Slow down machine speed for cleaner results
For caps, always stitch from center outward
---
🔹 Common Mistakes
❌ Using regular digitized design
❌ Too thin satin columns
❌ High density → thread breaks
❌ Not covering foam fully
