Well-Placed Hope

Psalm 119:114 (NIV®)

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.

Our culture is good at telling us hope can be found in things. Television commercials tell me this investment will secure my future, and this computer will make me a whiz in the office, and this pair of running shoes will make me an athlete. Perhaps you’ve put your hope in a house that was a money pit, or even a job that wasn’t the perfect fit you hoped it would be. We’ve all placed our hope in things that proved to be a disappointment. Let’s follow the psalmist’s example and place our hope where we will not be disappointed: in our unchanging God and His unchanging Word.

THINK ABOUT IT

God’s Word never fails, never falters, and always stands. It lights our way and provides a refuge of hope—all the way into eternity with Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, You have invited me to place my hope in You and Your Word. I am grateful You are unchanging when so much around me seems to be changing. Your Word says You have a plan for my good and not for my harm, and I choose to place my hope in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Living As God’s Creation

Genesis 4:20-21 (NLT®)

Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the first of those who raise livestock and live in tents. His brother’s name was Jubal, the first of all who play the harp and flute.

The Bible contains many lists of people. Some are meticulous genealogies that list generations of fathers and sons. Some tell us how long people lived and how many children they had. Some, like this one, give us specific details, such as one brother being the first nomadic herdsman and the other being the first instrumentalist. These lists tell us just how involved and detail-oriented God is. We can surmise that these two brothers with such similar names—Jabal and Jubal—were very different in temperament and skills. Don’t ever doubt that you are known to God and by God. He created you to live in this generation. He knows the names of your ancestors and your descendants. He knows where you live and what your occupation is. He has a plan for your life and important purposes for you to accomplish.

THINK ABOUT IT

Embrace who God created you to be. He made each and every one of us unique, so we can uniquely honor Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You that You don’t make mistakes. Thank You for who You made me to be. Please show me how to use my talents and skills for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,

Our Best Future!

Romans 15:13 (NIV®)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The great, overarching lie Satan infuses into the world is that following Jesus will make you miserable, while not following Him will make you happy. The proposition is that ungodliness leads to the most fun and fulfilling life imaginable, while godliness leads to boredom and frustration. But in a world struggling desperately to find joy, peace, and hope, it is our responsibility to tell people that those things can be abundantly found in Jesus. Any other source is temporary and fleeting. Any other source is subject to the whims of people and even the weather. Earthly pleasures are temporary, but the joy, peace, and hope found in Jesus can be ours forever. That is a message the world needs to hear from our lips and see in our lives.

THINK ABOUT IT

When we respect and show reverence for God, His blessings will overtake us, and we’ll receive the freedom, joy, fulfillment, and contentment that can only come from Him. It’s our best future!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your plan and purpose for my life. I choose to believe it exceeds anything the world has to offer and that it will bring me joy, contentment, and fulfillment. Nothing can keep me from those blessings when I cooperate with You. So, I release myself from any lie that diminishes Your truth and the freedom You offer me through Jesus’ sacrifice. I place my future in Your merciful hands. In Jesus' name, amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Allen Jackson

Sharpening Through Scripture

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV®)

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pe*****tes even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Many movies display the deadly efficiency of a sharply honed, double-edged sword. The writer of Hebrews says God’s Word is sharper than any double-edged sword. He says it will pe*****te to the dividing of your soul and your spirit, separating your will, your emotions, and your thoughts. That means God’s Word will help us distinguish between a carnal, self-indulgent response to life and a godly, Spirit-informed response to life. I need help with that because I have found that I can convince myself that I am right about anything. I encourage you to invest quality time in reading God’s Word. Even when you have trouble understanding it, or when you read something that hits close to home and annoys you, God will use it to counter the lies the world tells and draw you closer to Him.

THINK ABOUT IT

Spending more time in God’s Word isn’t difficult. You can download a Bible app to make it accessible from your phone. Then, listen to the Bible on your way to work or while you exercise. Keep your Bible open on your desk or kitchen table so you can read it throughout the day. Begin to purposely spend more time in God’s Word. It will transform your life!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, help me to go to Your Word throughout the day, in all situations. Give me a hunger for Your Word, and help me to understand it more each time I read it. Thank You for the access I have to Your Word and for the power it holds. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,

Leading with Our Faith

1 Thessalonians 1:7-8 (NIV®)

You became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.

Quite often, someone will say they feel led to tell me about something I should say or do. If I reply, “I don’t sense the Lord leading me to do that, but maybe He’s asking you to do it.” That’s when they respond, “But that’s your job, Preacher!” Paul was in Thessalonica for just three Sabbaths before he was driven out by an angry mob (Acts 17). The preacher was gone, but the people and the message remained in place. The gospel was so powerful, and the people were so eager to proclaim it that their resulting influence grew until it was felt throughout the region. You cannot hire me or any other professional Christian to use your Kingdom influence for you. Your leadership is real, and your advocacy for Jesus is important. When you begin to use your voice to tell others about what Jesus has done, your faith will ring out and spread until it is known everywhere.

THINK ABOUT IT

We need to learn to lead with our faith, and the only way to learn is to just begin. If you wait until you're an expert, until you don't make a mistake, or until somebody else does it for you, you'll probably never start. We need to begin to learn to lead with our faith now.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me in this unique season to be salt and light and make a difference in my world. Help me to courageously use my voice to lead others toward You as I carry Your message of reconciliation to my neighborhood, friends, family, community, and workplace. May I never be an undercover Christian but consistently use my influence so Jesus might be exalted. In His name, amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Allen Jackson

Operating From God’s Grace

1 Timothy 1:12-14 (NIV®)

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

When Paul said he had been “a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man,” he was not exaggerating. We have a hard time believing Jesus would choose someone like that. We think Jesus chooses the kind and timid, but Paul’s example shows otherwise. Paul had been vehemently opposed to Jesus, and then he was all-in for Jesus. He spent the rest of his life spreading the gospel and growing the Church. The same man who had persecuted Jesus-followers would now be persecuted. And in the midst of it all, he thanked God for His grace. Don’t ever think that your past mistakes hinder your present ability to participate in God’s Kingdom. Nothing could be further from the truth.

THINK ABOUT IT

All your experiences shaped you into who you are today, and God will use you if you raise your hand!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You that my past mistakes don’t define me. Your grace is enough for me. Thank You for choosing me to be a part of Your Kingdom. Help me use the lessons I have learned to strengthen those around me for Your Kingdom purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,

Messengers of What Jesus Has Done

Mark 1:32-34 (NLT®)

That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. The whole town gathered at the door to watch. So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons.

In the preceding verses of this chapter, Mark mentions that Simon’s mother-in-law had been sick with a high fever. When Jesus, James, and John went to Simon and Andrew’s home and found her ill, Jesus took her hand, and the fever left her. Later, after they had eaten a meal she had prepared and the sun had set, people who were sick and demon-possessed came to Him for healing. I’m sure word had spread about Jesus healing Simon’s mother-in-law, and a crowd gathered to see if Jesus would be able to help anyone else. These onlookers were drawn by what they heard Jesus had done, but they left that place as messengers of what they had witnessed firsthand. When we tell others what we have seen Jesus do, other people will want to know more. Some of them may invite Jesus to work in their lives, too.

THINK ABOUT IT

The message we have for our generation is that faith in Jesus will change your life, deliver hope, rescue you from sin, and restore your relationship with God!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending us Your Word and Your messengers. Grant me the boldness to singleheartedly follow You and the willingness to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Christ. I offer myself for Your purposes, and I choose to be a faithful messenger of all He has done. May Jesus’ name be glorified. In His name, amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Allen Jackson

Blessed with Freedom

2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV®)

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Some may think being patriotic is out of fashion, but I'm unapologetically grateful to God for the nation in which I was born. I believe we have liberties that are unique in the world, and history has spoken clearly on the efforts of those who signed our Declaration of Independence. This nation put forth the proposition that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and it has endured now for almost 250 years. America is the oldest constitutional republic on Earth. This is not to say we're perfect—we are far from that. Our founding fathers were not perfect. Our current leaders are not perfect. Our systems are not perfect, and I believe we’re experiencing a time of great turmoil. But if we continue to stand for God’s Truth—if we choose honor, dignity, and duty over selfishness and invite His Spirit into our midst, as generations of men and women have before us—I believe He will heal our land and bless us once again with liberty and prosperity. I’m grateful for the freedoms we have, and I will continue to pray for our nation to turn toward righteousness, godliness, and purity, so we might experience that freedom for many years to come.

THINK ABOUT IT

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:1–2, NIV®). We have a biblical directive to pray for those in authority over us. As you celebrate Independence Day, take a moment to pray for our leaders and our nation!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for this great nation and the liberty and prosperity You have blessed us with. Thank You for the freedom to celebrate and worship You without fear of reprisal. We are not perfect, and we need Your healing. We come today in humility to ask You to look upon us once again with mercy and grace. Forgive us. May we once again choose You with our whole hearts. Give us leaders who fear Your name and make choices that honor You. May we choose to walk in righteousness, godliness, and purity. You are the Author of freedom. Bless our nation once again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Allen Jackson
